Job description

Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) is seeking a Client Services Associate to join our team.

BDS is a public defense office representing low-income New Yorkers in criminal, family, immigration, and civil legal matters. For nearly 30 years, BDS has worked, in and out of court, to protect and uphold the rights of individuals and to change laws and systems that perpetuate injustice and inequality. Our work with clients is focused on the intersections of these legal systems that disproportionately impact Black and Brown communities living in poverty.

BDS represents thousands of people each year who have diverse, complex, and multi-faceted legal needs. In addition to a zealous legal defense, our interdisciplinary teams of attorneys, social workers and advocates provide a wide range of legal and advocacy services, including for housing, public benefits, education, and employment. BDS staff work collaboratively and across disciplines to deliver high-quality legal services that serve the people we represent, their families and communities.

The Client Services Center is the first point of contact for clients and visitors coming to our Brooklyn office. The Client Services Team greets clients and visitors, assisting with appointments and other needs, and generally responds to Client Services requests.

Responsibilities

  • Provide welcoming environment for clients and staff, responding to anticipated needs as well as urgent requests.

  • Connect clients with staff members for planned and unplanned appointments as needed, including managing room availability.

  • Respond to Client Services requests including room booking, scheduling Ubers, activating new phones for clients, packing Riker’s clothing packages and printing client documents.

  • Ready packages for mailing and deliver to Post Office.

  • Help maintain regular inventory of clothing, phones, gift cards and other items and ensure that said items are available for pick-up in designated office areas as well as maintaining order of such areas as needed.

  • Restock various agency locations with client items as needed.

  • Work on various projects and events in and near various BDS locations in Brooklyn and Queens.

  • Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including a client and service-oriented mindset.

  • Ability to interact with clients in a professional, caring, and responsive manner.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

  • Ability to multi-task and be flexible in a fast-paced setting, including responding to unforeseen requests as they arise.

  • Ability to learn new technology and programs.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Bilingual Spanish-English speaking a plus.

Position Information

This is a non-exempt, salaried position. The regular schedule is Monday to Friday, 9:30-5:30. This is a 5-day in person position based primarily at BDS’s offices in Downtown Brooklyn with some work at other locations as required.

BDS determines salary on a pay scale based on education and experience. For this position there is a salary range of approximately $60,000 - $65,000 depending on the applicant’s education and experience. BDS offers comprehensive benefits including health insurance and a 403(b) retirement plan. In order to support work/life balance and family-friendly policies, BDS has generous vacation, sick, holiday, family, and medical leave policies.
