About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Temporary part-time Phlebotomist (Donor Centre Associate) to join our dynamic Collections team in our Calgary donor centre. 

The Collections team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by collecting donor blood, and blood components in a safe manner to provide patients with lifesaving products every day. In this role, you will perform phlebotomy in the collection process in accordance with health and safety standards. You will work face-to-face with our donors, team members, and volunteers providing them with safe and quality service during each stage of the collection process

Formula for success
  • Leveraging your superb client service skills and ability to communicate effectively with donors and your team, you will conduct registration and confidential screening to determine eligibility and build and promote a positive donor experience.
  • Your knowledge or experience in following procedures you will ensure safe processing and handling of blood products as well as respecting donor privacy
  • You will apply your experience and training in phlebotomy to perform venipuncture according to established standards, monitoring donors for safety and comfort, and providing post-donation care and instruction.
  • Your excellent attention to detail will be utilized in ensuring accuracy of product information in our computer system, when completing the product labelling process, and when preparing products.
  • Drive continuous improvement by sharing your knowledge and supporting best practices that enhance processes and elevate the donor experience.
  • At mobile events within our communities, you will assist in setting up booths, tables, and other equipment to ensure donor clinics are properly set up for use.
Desired education and skills
  • Completion of high school. 
  • Completion of accredited training program in phlebotomy or one-year related experience. 
  • Minimum 3 years of progressive experience working with the public, particularly in a high customer-focused environment.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with current Good Manufacturing Practices
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to learn new systems and programs. Previous knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook are considered assets.
  • Ability to communicate in more than one language is an asset and enhances the quality of donor interactions.

What you can expect
  • Shifts/hours will vary. You must be flexible to accommodate assigned shifts which are based on operational needs; length of shifts varies according to the event which takes place at Canadian Blood Services fixed and mobile donor centers. Shifts include days, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays.
  • Travel will be required for mobile events in our communities, including an occasional overnight Medicine Hat. Transportation and accomodations will be provided by Canadian Blood Services.
  • Physical requirements for the role include the ability to lift weights up to 10 kg (22 lbs.).
