What is a cleared job?

A 'cleared' job refers to a position that requires an employee to hold a security clearance, typically granted by a government agency. Security clearances are necessary for accessing classified or sensitive information, and they involve a thorough background investigation. These jobs are common in the defense, intelligence, and federal contracting sectors. Holding a security clearance can make you eligible for specialized roles and often results in higher pay and job security.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cleared professional?

To excel as a Cleared professional, you must possess a strong background in your field of expertise (such as IT, engineering, or intelligence), paired with an active government security clearance. Familiarity with secure systems, classified networks, and compliance with federal security protocols is often required. Discretion, integrity, and effective communication are critical soft skills for handling sensitive information and collaborating with security-conscious teams. These competencies ensure both the safeguarding of national interests and the successful delivery of critical projects in secure environments.

What are some unique challenges faced by professionals in cleared roles, and how can they navigate them effectively?

Professionals in cleared positions often encounter strict security protocols, which can limit their ability to discuss work outside of secure environments or with non-cleared colleagues. This can make networking and information sharing more challenging. Additionally, the need to maintain clearance requires ongoing adherence to security guidelines and regular background checks. To navigate these challenges, it’s important to stay up to date on security training, build trusted relationships within the cleared community, and maintain clear boundaries between classified and unclassified information.

Job description

About Chainalysis Government Solutions

Chainalysis Government Solutions (CGS) is a wholly-owned Chainalysis subsidiary that provides blockchain intelligence solutions, including technology, training, and services to law enforcement, defense, intelligence and regulatory customers across the U.S. Government.

Blockchain technology is powering a growing wave of innovation. Businesses and governments around the world are using blockchains to make banking more efficient, connect with their customers, investigate criminal cases and track transnational threats. As the adoption of blockchain technology grows, more and more organizations seek access to all this ecosystem has to offer. That’s where Chainalysis comes in. We provide complete knowledge of what’s happening on blockchains through our data, services, and solutions. With Chainalysis, organizations can navigate blockchains safely and with confidence.

As a Systems Engineer supporting Cleared Programs, you’ll serve as a key technical bridge between Chainalysis Government Solutions and national security customers operating in highly sensitive environments. You’ll support the full technical lifecycle — from technical discovery, capability demonstrations, and proofs of value through deployment, integration, configuration, and ongoing operation of the platform in customer environments.

The role has a strong emphasis on on-premises infrastructure and requires the ability to operate independently within classified customer environments. You’ll work closely with customer technical stakeholders as well as Chainalysis product and engineering teams, translating customer needs and operational feedback into technical solutions and product direction. The ideal candidate is an experienced systems or solutions engineer with strong technical depth, excellent communication skills, an ownership mindset, and the ability to serve as a trusted technical advisor to both operators and executives.

Please note that this role requires you to be physically on-site with the customer in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area (WMA) on an as-needed basis. In this role, you’ll:
  • ILead technical discovery, capability demonstrations, and proofs of value with cleared customers

  • Serve as the technical expert customers rely on, owning deployment, integration, and configuration of the Chainalysis platform within customer environments, both on-premises and cloud-based

  • Lead the deployment and operation of solutions with a strong focus on on-premise infrastructure

  • Diagnose, report, and independently resolve product and system issues while maintaining rigorous documentation

  • Interface between customer technical stakeholders and Chainalysis product and engineering teams, building strong relationships based on technical expertise and trust

  • Collaborate closely with product and engineering teams to resolve technical challenges and communicate key updates to customers and the internal CGS team

  • Contribute technical responses to RFIs and RFPs and support pursuit teams as the on-premise subject matter expert

  • Train and enable customer technical staff and troubleshoot alongside them

  • Configure and integrate systems across customer environments, APIs, data integrations, and cloud infrastructure

  • Translate customer requirements, operational feedback, and technical constraints into actionable recommendations for internal teams

  • Actively learn the environments in which the Chainalysis platform operates in order to identify risks, constraints, and opportunities for improvement

We’re looking for candidates who have:
  • Active TS/SCI Clearance with Full Scope Polygraph required at the start

  • U.S. citizenship required; this position is not eligible for visa sponsorship

  • 5+ years of experience in systems engineering, solutions engineering, sales engineering, or technical delivery for data platforms, analytics, cybersecurity, or SaaS products in classified environments

  • Deep expertise with on-premise infrastructure and enterprise products, along with APIs, data integrations, cloud environments, and enterprise deployment patterns

  • Proficiency with core Amazon Web Services (AWS) services, including EC2, VPC, ELB, RDS, S3, and EBS

  • Strong Linux and Windows system administration experience, preferably in C2S/AWS environments

  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL, including navigating database schemas and querying tables

  • Experience troubleshooting and diagnosing web application issues using browser developer tools and system/application logs

  • Experience remediating security vulnerabilities and hardening systems in accordance with RMF and STIG requirements

  • Proficiency with automation and scripting, specifically Python and Bash/Unix shell scripting

  • Ability to demonstrate, whiteboard, and clearly explain technical concepts to both operators and executive stakeholders

  • A self-directed and proactive operating style suited to working within a small cleared team

  • Strong written documentation skills and the ability to produce work that stands on its own within customer environments

Stands Out:
  • Prior systems engineering, solutions engineering, or technical delivery experience supporting IC or DoD programs

  • Experience deploying and sustaining software in air-gapped or disconnected environments

  • Exposure to blockchain technology, financial data, or investigative tooling

  • Familiarity with FedRAMP and/or Impact Level (IL) deployments

Compensation & Benefits:
  • $230,000 base salary + annual bonus

  • Equity

  • Flexible time off, plus mental-health and volunteer days

  • Up to 16 weeks of paid parental leave for primary caregivers

  • Cigna nationwide health plans with company HSA contribution

  • Fidelity 401(k)

  • $1,500 annual professional development budget

  • Phone and internet reimbursement
