Maintenance Laborer

The City of Concord Public Works Department is hiring Maintenance Laborers to perform a variety of duties pertaining to community betterment. Duties vary depending upon assignment. This recruitment is open and continuous, and the list established by this recruitment may be used to fill future part-time, limited term vacancies for up to one year, as vacancies arise.
Maintenance Laborers assigned to Parks Maintenance will assist in maintaining the cleanliness of the City's parks so that they are well kept for the enjoyment of our residents.
Maintenance Laborers assigned to the Community Cleanup crew will assist in litter/trash pick-up, graffiti abatement and public outreach.
The Public Works Department
Public Works strives to develop and provide a variety of customer driven maintenance services and programs to protect the City's investment of infrastructure and public facilities and ensure the health and safety of Concord's community in the most efficient and cost effective manner. Public Works provides services in the following five divisions: Infrastructure, Parks Maintenance, Facilities Maintenance, Administration and Fleet, and Transportation and Signals.
What you will be doing:
Under direct supervision and independently, the Maintenance Laborer will perform litter/trash pick-up, restroom clean-up, general maintenance, leaf/debris pick-up, graffiti abatement, and public outreach, depending upon assignment.
Part Time/Seasonal Maintenance Laborers are hired by the City's Public Works Department throughout the year, and on an as-needed basis. These are part-time/temporary positions, limited to 960 hours per fiscal year and provide no benefits.
SELECTION PROCESS
1. Submit a completed City of Concord and the required supplemental question responses online at www.cityofconcord.org. Only application materials submitted online during the filing period will be accepted.
2. All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, and passing candidates will be referred to the Public Works Department for review.
3. Those candidates demonstrating the strongest qualifications will be invited to interview.
4. Successful candidates will be provided a conditional offer letter, and must clear the DOJ live scan, medical evaluation, drug screen, driving history and other related components.
Conviction History:
If you receive a conditional job offer, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you have received a conditional job offer. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances. Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude you from a job with the City of Concord.
Driving History/Medical Examination/Drug Screen:
If you receive a conditional job offer, you will be required to demonstrate a clean driving history for the previous seven year period in order to qualify. You will also be required to pass a medical examination and a drug screen.
Examples of duties include, but are not limited to
Parks Maintenance
  1. Assisting with basic grounds-keeping
  2. Public Works maintenance and construction activities
  3. Pick up and removing trash
  4. Maintaining park restrooms
  5. Leaf/debris clean-up
  6. Performing data entry relevant to parks assets, work order management, and other relevant platforms
  7. Other duties as assigned

Streets Maintenance
  1. Clears and cleans roadsides, gutters, culverts, catch basins, and other drainage facilities
  2. Picks up garbage and litter; cleans sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas
  3. Assists Maintenance Response Team in illegal dumping and encampment cleanup in City right of way and multi-jurisdictional areas
  4. Other duties as assigned

Sewer Maintenance
  1. Assists in removing debris from sewers and in pulling, cleaning, repairing, or inspecting equipment through sewer lines
  2. Other duties as assigned

Traffic Safety/Signals Maintenance
  1. Assists in filling paint supply tanks, moving and placing stencils or traffic warning devices, and in placing posts and mounting signs
  2. Other duties as assigned

Building Maintenance
  1. Assists the Graffiti Removal Program to remove graffiti in and around City limits within 24 hours in response to the Graffiti Hotline.
  2. Other duties as assigned

For Most Positions
  1. Operates, services, cleans and cares for tools and equipment used on the job
  2. Follows safe work practices and observes safety precautions
  3. Performs a variety of physical labor as assigned.
  4. Reads and interprets maps and basic blueprints.
  5. May assist in community and public outreach efforts to promote Public Works projects and programs
  6. Promotes the City's Mission to make Concord a city of the highest quality by providing responsive, cost-effective, and innovative government services; understands and subscribes to the Vision and Values Statement adopted by the City
  7. Performs other work as assigned

Qualifications
Knowledge of:
  • Basic equipment such as shovels, rakes, small power mowers, spray equipment and pneumatic tools
  • Safety techniques for removing litter, cleaning hardscapes and assisting in basic landscape maintenance labor in the City's parks
Ability to:
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, staff and the general public
  • Write clearly in order to complete records and documentation of actions taken
  • Utilize desktop and mobile computer devices
  • Provide exceptional customer service

Education: Satisfactory completion of high school, or the equivalent
Experience: Six months of experience performing work involving the general public. Work experience in park clean-up, landscaping, or litter clean-up is highly desirable.
Other
Possession of a valid California Driver's License by time of employment and maintenance of a satisfactory driving record.
