Job description

The Weitz Company is hiring a Claims Manager I to support the administration, analysis, documentation, and resolution of construction-related claims and disputes incurred by the company. This role works closely with the Legal, Risk Management, Operations, and project teams to manage both insured and uninsured construction-related claims arising from project operations. The Claims Manager I serves as a key coordinator among project teams, insurance carriers, brokers, adjusters, consultants, attorneys, subcontractors, and other stakeholders to facilitate timely and effective claim resolution.

What You’ll Do:

  • Administer and track construction-related claims and disputes from initial notice through final resolution (excluding Workers Compensation claims)
  • Assist with insured and uninsured construction claims including liability, builders’ risk, property damage, subcontractor default insurance (SDI), professional liability, pollution, defective work, delay, warranty, payment, and subcontractor disputes
  • Coordinate collection and organization of project records, contracts, schedules, correspondence, invoices, photographs, daily reports, and other claim documentation
  • Maintain electronic claim files and litigation support files
  • Prepare claim summaries, chronologies, exposure analyses, and status reports
  • Assist in preparation of proof of loss submissions and insurance recovery packages
  • Support the Legal department with responses to law firms, insurers, claimants, subcontractors, owners, and regulatory agencies
  • Review contracts and insurance policies to identify and monitor notice provisions, indemnity obligations, and recovery opportunities
  • Maintain claim activity and documentation within the Risk Management Information System (RIMS)
  • Prepare claim activity, exposure, and recovery reports

What We’re Looking For:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Insurance, Business, Construction Management, Legal Studies, Finance, or related field preferred
  • Experience:
    • 3+ years of experience in construction claims, insurance claims, legal support, risk management, contract administration, or project administration required
  • Skills:
    • Ability to thoroughly review and understand contracts and insurance policies
    • Analytical with a high attention to detail
    • Organized and comfortable balancing multiple projects or requests  
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to build strong relationships across the organization
    • Analytical thinker with project management skills
  • Technology:
    • Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Work, PowerPoint, Excel)
    • Ability to learn specific job-related software upon hire 
  • Additional Requirements:
    • Must be able to work in-person at our office in Des Moines 5 days per week
