How much do civilian geospatial intelligence jobs pay per year?
What is a civilian geospatial intelligence?
A Civilian Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) job involves analyzing imagery, maps, and geospatial data to support military, government, and law enforcement operations. These professionals use satellite and aerial imagery, geographic information systems (GIS), and other data sources to assess terrain, monitor activity, and provide actionable intelligence. They work in agencies like the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) or private contractors supporting defense and security missions. Their analysis helps in disaster response, national security, and strategic planning.
What does a typical workday look like for someone in civilian geospatial intelligence?
A typical day in Civilian Geospatial Intelligence often involves collecting and analyzing spatial data, creating detailed maps or models, and interpreting geospatial information to support decision-making. Professionals regularly collaborate with engineers, analysts, and policymakers to provide actionable insights through data visualization and reports. The work may include both independent data analysis and team-based project meetings, with a balance of office work and, occasionally, field data collection. This dynamic environment allows you to apply technical expertise while contributing to a variety of projects in sectors like urban planning, emergency management, or national security.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in civilian geospatial intelligence, and why are they important?
To thrive in Civilian Geospatial Intelligence, you need a solid background in geographic information systems (GIS), spatial analysis, remote sensing, and data interpretation, usually supported by a relevant degree such as geography, GIS, or earth sciences. Expertise with technical tools such as ArcGIS, ERDAS Imagine, Python, and remote sensing platforms, as well as certifications like GISP, are highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are key soft skills for success. These combined capabilities enable professionals to accurately analyze geographic data, inform decision-making, and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

For current FMV-qualified professionals, this program offers enhanced training designed to build on and expand your existing expertise.
Key Responsibilities

- Specialized instruction in FMV exploitation tools
- Motion GEOINT techniques
- Theater-specific cultural familiarization
- Analyze and exploit FMV collected by ISR platforms, applying HUMINT and SIGINT to produce actionable intelligence.
- Create and distribute imagery-derived graphic products and reports for senior decision-makers across government agencies.
- Compile and prepare intelligence materials to support high-level briefings.
- Leverage advanced imagery tools, including electronic light tables, to exploit national technical means (NTM) imagery.
- Access career development opportunities on day one, including generous paid time off, education benefits, and structured advancement pathways.
- Explore rapid career progression, with potential cross-training into Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), Ground Moving Target Indicator (GMTI), FMV instruction, and FMV advanced research roles.
- Flexible and dependable, able to work a rotating shift schedule (7am-7pm or 7pm-7am) that alternates days and nights monthly, including weekends and holidays.
- Comfortable in a fast-paced environment, with strong multitasking skills.
- A clear, effective communicator.
- Experienced in intelligence operations, especially the TCPED (Tasking, Collection, Processing, Exploitation, and Dissemination) process.
- Proactive about learning new skills and expanding your analytic and technical capabilities.
- Collaborative and innovative, able to solve problems creatively in partnership with government customers.
- In possession of an active TS/SCI security clearance, with the ability to pass a polygraph examination.
- Experience: 3+ years in intelligence roles OR a Bachelor's/Master's degree in a customer-approved discipline.
- Training: Completion of a formal intelligence school course (typically 3+ months full time) resulting in an Intelligence MOS (e.g., All-Source, IMINT, SIGINT, HUMINT).
