Job description

Job Title: Senior Structural Engineer
Department: Engineering
Reports to: Civil / Structural Department Lead
GENERAL PURPOSE OF THIS JOB (Summary)
The Senior Structural Engineer provides safe, "Best for Project" solutions for complex projects, while ensuring regulatory compliance for all engineering deliverables. The Senior Structural Engineer is responsible for directing and collaborating with the Structural Engineers, designers, other disciplines, and team members in developing safe and effective designs. This includes participation in model and drawing reviews and completing calculations for complex permanent mine facility infrastructure, temporary sinking gear, material handling, process systems, and above ground facilities. It is expected that they will have knowledge of pertinent codes and standards and their application to the work performed. The Senior Structural Engineer will be in responsible charge for large projects and will seal work done under their direction. They will be expected to work within budget and meet project schedules efficiently. As they work on project, they will train and mentor other engineers and designers to follow company workflows and standards and continually improve their technical skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
HEALTH AND SAFETY
  • Work in compliance with all Health and Safety rules, codes, and regulations.
  • Be aware of any health and safety hazards and report to Health and Safety Department.
  • Advocate safe behaviour and incorporate safety into the designs produced by the group.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This description lists the core responsibilities and duties of the position.
  • Perform structural analysis and design of permanent and temporary works related to the construction of surface and underground mine facilities and infrastructure.
  • Generate or direct the generation of preliminary sketches, detailed drawings, material take-offs or other deliverables that effectively and simply illustrate components of the design, while conforming to internal engineering and design standards.
  • Collaborate with Operations and internal multidisciplinary design, engineering, project management and operations teams to produce "Best for Project" designs that are safe, constructible, operable and maintainable.
  • Perform within designated schedule and budget as defined within project requirements.
  • Understand, use, and contribute to department specific standards and templates for the design of steel, concrete, and other structural systems. This includes IBC, AISC, ASCE, and ACI codes along with MSHA, OSHA, Ontario Mining Regulations, and industry standards both current and legacy.
  • Provide technical assistance during tender and procurement periods to answer questions, assess vendor packages and make technical recommendations.
  • Provide support during fabrication/manufacturing including shop drawing reviews.
  • Develop and grow positive relationships with internal, operations and client teams.
  • Collaborate with designers to establish how drawings will be laid out to ensure that the Engineer's requirements will be adequately conveyed.
  • Perform and/or direct other engineers to perform complete analysis for structural systems and file all calculations orderly for retrieval and reference.
  • Participate in Design Reviews and Risk Assessments.
  • Provide technical support in response to field enquiries.
  • Support the identification of deviations in job scope, estimation of changes and communication of changes to the project management team.
  • Conduct quality assurance shop or on-site reviews of fabricated or constructed work.
  • Prepare and issue on-site reports, complete with observations and recommendations.
  • Prepare Engineering related project close out documentation.
  • Participate in recruiting efforts.
  • Additional weekly or daily hours, while infrequent, are anticipated.
  • Act as the Engineer in Responsible Charge for Cementation in various states in support of the company's licensure activities.
  • Obtain engineering licensure in multiple states.
  • Lead site visit teams to both operations projects and engineering projects.
  • Assist in development of proposals, estimates, and reports for business development.
  • Other duties as assigned.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
  • Occasional travel to project sites, offices, and/or to conduct shop reviews is required.
  • Travel periods range from one day to several weeks and may be overseas.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • No direct reports but will oversee the work of structural engineers and designer teams.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited institution. Emphasis on structural courses is preferred
  • Masters degree in Structural Engineering is preferred but not required
  • Licensed Engineer in the States of Utah and California or can obtain
  • Licensed Structural Engineer is preferred but not required
  • Previous relevant work experience in underground mining or heavy industrial infrastructure is preferred
  • Minimum 10 to 12 years of relevant experience
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES
  • Proficient with engineering structural systems including:
    • Steel framing and detailing
    • Concrete buildings and foundations
    • Industrial facility design
    • Shaft hoisting and underground mining systems
  • Knowledge of engineering structural systems including:
    • Wood and Masonry building design
  • Skilled in the following software packages:
    • RISA3D (preferred), STAAD or other FEA programs
    • RISA Foundation, RISA Connection, Mathcad
    • Advance Steel, Revit, or AutoCAD
  • Familiar with the following software packages:
    • Bluebeam, Navisworks, Adobe, MS Office Suite
