What is the difference between Civil Structural Engineer vs Civil Engineer?

AspectCivil Structural EngineerCivil Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Civil Engineering, PE license, structural certificationsBachelor's in Civil Engineering, PE license (optional)
Work EnvironmentDesigning, analyzing, and inspecting structures like buildings and bridgesBroader projects including transportation, water resources, and infrastructure
Industry UsageSpecialized in structural safety and integrityGeneral civil engineering projects across multiple sectors

While both roles require a civil engineering background and licensure, Civil Structural Engineers focus specifically on the design and safety of structures like buildings and bridges. Civil Engineers have a broader scope, working on various infrastructure projects. The choice depends on your interest in structural design versus general civil engineering work.

What is a civil structural engineer?

Civil Structural Engineers are professionals who design, analyze, and oversee the construction of structures such as buildings, bridges, and towers to ensure they are safe, stable, and able to withstand various loads and environmental conditions. They use principles of physics, mathematics, and material science to evaluate how structures will perform under stress and during their intended use. Their work is crucial in both new construction and the assessment or retrofitting of existing structures.

What are some typical challenges civil structural engineers face when coordinating with multidisciplinary teams on large projects?

Civil Structural Engineers often collaborate with architects, mechanical, and electrical engineers to ensure their designs integrate seamlessly with other systems. Challenges can include reconciling conflicting design requirements, managing changes in project scope, and maintaining clear communication across disciplines. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong project management skills and the ability to adapt to evolving project needs while maintaining structural integrity and safety. Being proactive in meetings and documentation helps prevent misunderstandings and keeps complex projects on track.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a civil structural engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Structural Engineer, you need a strong background in structural analysis, design principles, and materials science, usually supported by a degree in civil engineering and a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like AutoCAD, SAP2000, ETABS, and building codes is essential. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These competencies ensure the safety, efficiency, and compliance of structures, which are critical for public safety and project success.

ย
We are seeking aย Project Engineer - Structural with 5-8 years of experience to support the design and delivery of foundation and structural systems across a range of infrastructure and renewable energy projects. You'll work closely with senior engineers and contribute to projects from concept through construction, with a primary focus on structural design for solar tracker systems, equipment pads, and site development structures.ย
ย
This position is ideal for someone with strong technical fundamentals, work ethic, and a desire to grow into a leadership role.ย
Structural Design & Engineering:
  • Participate in structural engineering efforts for utility substation projects including control enclosures, transformer foundations, dead-end structures, capacitor banks, and static mastsย
  • Review project documents and develop structural Basis of Design (BOD), including loads, design codes, geotechnical inputs, and material assumptionsย
  • Design and size shallow and deep foundations (e.g., spread footings, drilled piers, embedded posts) based on geotechnical recommendations and equipment loadsย
  • Perform load calculations (dead, live, wind, seismic) and develop structural models using accepted FEA tools (e.g., RISA, RAM, STAAD)ย
  • Coordinate with geotechnical engineers to integrate foundation performance assumptions and loading capacities (e.g., LPILE, MFAD inputs)ย
  • Prepare structural drawings, elevations, details, and specifications using AutoCAD and/or Revit for each milestone (30%, 60%, 90%, IFC)ย
Client & Vendor Coordination:
  • Coordinate with electrical engineers, control enclosure vendors, transformer manufacturers, and structure suppliers to obtain and interpret structural performance requirementsย
  • Support client-facing meetings to present a design approach and resolve technical commentsย
  • Review vendor-supplied structural performance requirements and incorporate into foundation and anchorage designย
  • Respond to RFIs and submittals related to structural foundations, design assumptions, and special inspectionsย
Other Areas of Focus:
  • Provide input on internal design standards, templates, and QA/QC processes for substation projectsย
  • Assist in developing resource plans, scopes, and estimates for future HV structural projectsย
  • Collaborate with civil and geotechnical teams to ensure fully integrated substation site designย
  • Stay current on relevant codes (IBC, ASCE 7, NESC, etc.), utility standards, and AHJ requirementsย
Team Collaboration & Growth:
  • Coordinate with internal geotechnical and civil teams for integrated designย
  • Attend internal design meetings and client calls as needed to stay aligned with project objectivesย
  • Receive mentorship from senior engineers with the opportunity to gradually take on more responsibilityย
  • Participate in internal learning, development, and project closeout reviewsย
