Job description

The American Family Insurance Legal Department is seeking an experienced Coverage Counsel who has demonstrated the ability to multi-task, work independently and in team settings, and deliver results. You will provide legal support for the Claims departments at the American Family companies. You will work on insurance coverage opinions, attend and provide guidance at roundtables and collaborate on best practices claims topics. You will also retain outside counsel on coverage litigation and monitor declaratory judgment actions. The ideal candidate will assist in the continuous improvement and implementation of the legal department strategies and promote an organizational culture that encourages ethical conduct and a commitment to compliance with applicable laws and regulations, as well as company policies and procedures. You will report to the Senior Manager, Legal.

Position Compensation Range:

$113,000.00 - $194,000.00

Compensation may vary based on the job level and your geographic work location. Relocation support is offered for eligible candidates.

Primary Accountabilities

  • You will conduct legal research and draft coverage opinions on all lines of business, including personal lines, commercial policies and non-standard auto products.

  • You will review knowledge articles and standard operating procedures for verification of compliance with state laws and regulations.

  • You will answer claims related questions from staff and management.

  • You will assist with Department of Insurance complaint responses.

  • You will develop uniform strategies within states on certain recurring subjects.

  • You will help monitor outside counsel on EUOs.

  • You will draft Reservation of Rights and coverage disclaimer letters.

  • You will participate in Claims roundtables as a legal expert.

Specialized Knowledge & Skills Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience providing customer-driven solutions, support or service

  • Demonstrated experience preparing civil pleadings, motions and discovery and deposing witnesses.

  • Demonstrated litigation experience.

  • Solid knowledge and understanding of rules of Professional Responsibility for the jurisdiction in which they practice.

  • Solid knowledge and understanding of tort, contract, and insurance law.

  • Admitted to the state bar in the state where they are located or (1) admission to the bar within one year of hire for individuals who must pass a bar exam or portions of a bar exam to be admitted or (2) bar admission as soon as practicable but no later than 60 days of hire for individuals with diploma privilege or who are eligible for in-house counsel registration.
