What are Civil Field Engineers?

Civil Field Engineers are professionals who oversee construction projects on-site, ensuring that designs and specifications are properly implemented. They coordinate with contractors, monitor progress, and address technical issues that arise during construction. Their role involves quality control, safety inspections, and reporting on project status to ensure everything complies with regulations and standards. Civil Field Engineers play a crucial role in bridging the gap between the design team and the construction crew.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Civil Field Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Field Engineer, you need a solid background in civil engineering principles, construction practices, and a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field. Familiarity with AutoCAD, project management software, surveying tools, and safety certifications like OSHA are typically required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you coordinate with contractors and adapt to on-site challenges. These skills ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to specification, minimizing delays and ensuring quality outcomes.

Job description

HGA is seeking a Civil Field Engineer to provide field engineering and technical support during construction of natural gas compressor stations (SSE Stations 145, 150, and/or 165). This position serves as an extension of the client's engineering and construction team on-site - supporting the Construction Inspection Team, tracking contractor progress, resolving civil/structural RFIs, and maintaining project records through mechanical completion and turnover to commissioning. The role reports administratively through HGA but takes day-to-day direction from the site Construction Manager.
Primary Responsibilities
Civil Engineering Support
  • Provide field oversight of sitework, grading, foundations, and structural installation against approved drawings and specifications.
  • Track concrete breaks for all foundations and verify designed compressive strengths are met prior to equipment being set (using the client's Concrete Design Verification Form).
  • Coordinate civil work with mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and commissioning teams.
  • Review and respond to civil/structural RFIs; support field changes and engineering clarifications; maintain the RFI log.
Work Planning & Progress Tracking
  • Assist with development of work plans, work permits, and other planning efforts as assigned by the Construction Manager.
  • Assist the Construction Manager with Earned Value Management tracking of contractor progress; help identify schedule/cost-reduction opportunities and evaluate Change Orders.
Commissioning Support
  • Support civil/structural punch list development and pre-commissioning walkdowns.
  • Verify major equipment foundations and pads are ready to match equipment delivery schedule; confirm dimensions/weights against design.
Technical Documentation
  • Maintain civil/structural redline drawings and coordinate transfer from field to office for as-builts.
  • Compile civil-related records for the project job box (coating/painting reports, corrosion & CP documentation, and other commissioning-required records).
  • Maintain a lessons-learned log of construction and operational issues.
Required Qualifications
  • Engineering degree, or equivalent field experience in lieu of degree.
  • Experience supporting construction of pipeline facilities, compressor stations, gas processing plants, or other heavy industrial projects.
  • Experience with civil/structural work, concrete/foundation inspection, or sitework.
  • Willingness to work a 60-hour/week, 6/10 schedule on-site for the duration of the assignment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Natural gas compressor stations or pipeline facilities specifically
  • Concrete testing/compressive strength verification
  • Earned Value Management or contractor progress tracking
  • Field engineering/inspection support role on a heavy industrial construction site
