What is civil environmental engineering?

Civil environmental engineering is a specialized branch of engineering that focuses on designing, building, and maintaining infrastructure projects with an emphasis on protecting the environment. This field combines civil engineering principles with environmental science to address issues such as water and air pollution, waste management, and sustainable urban development. Civil environmental engineers work on projects like water treatment plants, green buildings, and pollution control systems to promote public health and minimize environmental impact. They often collaborate with government agencies, private companies, and communities to create solutions that balance development needs and environmental protection.

What are some common challenges faced by civil environmental engineers in project management and how can they be addressed?

Civil environmental engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing regulatory compliance with project timelines, managing interdisciplinary teams, and adapting to unexpected environmental site conditions. To address these, it's important to maintain clear communication with stakeholders, stay updated on environmental regulations, and engage in thorough site assessments early in the process. Collaborating closely with other professionals such as urban planners, construction managers, and regulatory agencies also helps ensure smoother project delivery and better outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a civil environmental engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Environmental Engineer, you need a solid background in civil and environmental engineering principles, typically supported by a bachelor's degree and, often, a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with engineering software such as AutoCAD, GIS, and modeling tools, as well as knowledge of relevant environmental regulations, is crucial. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating with stakeholders and managing complex projects. These skills ensure the successful design and implementation of sustainable infrastructure solutions that meet regulatory standards and protect public health and the environment.

What is the difference between Civil Environmental Engineering vs Civil Engineering?

AspectCivil Environmental EngineeringCivil Engineering
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Civil Environmental Engineering, PE license often preferredBachelor's or Master's in Civil Engineering, PE license common
Work EnvironmentEnvironmental agencies, consulting firms, construction sites focused on environmental projectsConstruction sites, infrastructure projects, urban planning
Industry UsageEnvironmental protection, water resources, waste managementTransportation, structural design, urban development

While both roles involve civil engineering principles, Civil Environmental Engineering specializes in environmental protection and water resources, whereas Civil Engineering covers a broader range of infrastructure projects. Professionals often share similar credentials and work environments, but their focus areas differ significantly.

Are civil environmental engineers in high demand?

Civil environmental engineers are in high demand due to increasing infrastructure projects and environmental regulations. They often work in construction, consulting, and government agencies, with job growth expected to be steady as environmental concerns become more prominent. Strong technical skills and relevant certifications can enhance employment prospects in this field.

What does a civil and environmental engineer do?

A civil and environmental engineer designs, develops, and maintains infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, water supply systems, and environmental protection measures. They analyze environmental impacts, use engineering software, and often require licensure to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.

SCS Engineers is looking for a Senior Environmental/Civil Engineer for our Orlando office to work on various civil, solid waste and environmental related projects. You will prepare engineering calculations, drawings, reports, and permit applications and serve as the Engineer of Record on projects for public and private clients primarily in the Central and South Florida market. Responsibilities include engineering design, client communications, and staff coordination and development. Project responsibility will have a primary focus on stormwater and other development projects, with some future opportunities on solid waste management projects, including landfill gas, landfills and landfill infrastructure, which all may require design, engineering, permitting, construction, and operations support. This position may have the option for hybrid flexibility but is expected to be in our Orlando office.
At SCS, our workplace culture is guided by three core principles: trust, care, and grow. We are seeking a motivated Project Engineer to join our Orlando team-an opportunity designed for those continuing their careers and looking to further develop their skills through hands-on fieldwork, mentorship, and ongoing professional development.
How you can make an impact
  • Prepare engineering calculations, drawings, reports, and permit applications related to paving, grading, and drainage design.
  • Write and prepare technical reports and proposals.
  • Act as a client liaison by communicating with clients regarding field work coordination, project updates, reporting, design document status, permitting status, and meetings.
  • Lead permit processing and regulatory agency coordination efforts.
  • Review technical documents to ensure completeness and conformance to requirements.
  • Serve as the primary lead and point of contact for smaller-scope projects.
  • Prepare proposals and associated cost estimates.
  • Delegate portions of project deliverables to staff for completion.
  • Coordinate and manage field work associated with projects.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage junior-level staff.
  • Attend trade shows, present on technical topics, and participate in professional associations and committees.
  • Lead or actively participate in client prospecting and the development and execution of client plans, sales plans, and key opportunity plans.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Geotechnical Engineering required.
  • Minimum of 6 years of relevant environmental engineering experience required.
  • Florida Professional Engineer (P.E.) license (preferably Civil Engineering) required, or ability to obtain reciprocity within 6 months.
  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record required.

Pay Range
USD $96,475.00 - USD $120,000.00 /Yr.
