What is civil engineering technology?

Civil engineering technology is a field that focuses on the practical application of engineering principles to the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure projects, such as roads, bridges, buildings, and water systems. Civil engineering technologists assist engineers by preparing drawings, conducting site inspections, testing materials, and ensuring projects meet technical standards and regulations. They play a key role in transforming engineering plans into functional, safe, and sustainable structures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a civil engineering technologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Engineering Technologist, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, construction materials, and surveying methods, usually supported by a diploma or degree in civil engineering technology. Proficiency with CAD software, GIS systems, and project management tools is often required, along with relevant certifications like CET (Certified Engineering Technologist). Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you excel in coordinating with engineers, contractors, and clients. These skills and qualifications are vital for ensuring that infrastructure projects are designed, managed, and executed efficiently and safely.

What are some common challenges faced by civil engineering technologists when working on construction projects?

Civil Engineering Technologists often encounter challenges such as coordinating with diverse teams, managing tight project deadlines, and adapting to unexpected site conditions. They need to balance technical design work with on-site inspections and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are crucial for addressing issues that arise during construction, such as material delays or design modifications.

What is the difference between Civil Engineering Technology vs Civil Engineering?

AspectCivil Engineering TechnologyCivil Engineering
CredentialsAssociate's degree or diploma in civil engineering technologyBachelor's degree in civil engineering
Work EnvironmentPractical, fieldwork, construction sites, labsTheoretical, design offices, project planning
Job FocusImplementation, surveying, project managementDesign, analysis, research
Employer & Industry UsageConstruction firms, government agencies, consulting firmsEngineering firms, government agencies, consulting firms

While both roles support civil projects, Civil Engineering Technicians focus on practical application, construction, and project execution, often working under engineers. Civil Engineers are involved in designing and analyzing projects, requiring a deeper theoretical understanding. Both careers are vital in the civil industry, but they differ in education, responsibilities, and work scope.

What jobs can I get with civil engineering technology?

Graduates with a degree in civil engineering technology can work as civil engineering technicians, construction managers, surveyors, or site inspectors. These roles involve assisting with project design, planning, and supervision, often requiring knowledge of engineering software and construction methods.

Job description

Overview

Are you someone with strong civil technical capabilities? Do you enjoy building relationships and working collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders? Are you a problem solver with a practical, detail-oriented approach? If you enjoy working on challenging transportation projects, this opportunity is for you. With strong communication skills and initiative, you will thrive in our fast-paced and agile environment.

Your opportunity

Dillon's Transportation group is seeking an Intermediate/Senior Transportation Designer/Drafter to join our Highways & Bridges Practice, with a primary focus on highway transportation infrastructure and associated Transportation Infrastructure / Field Services Support work - supporting projects for Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure (MTI), the City of Winnipeg and local municipalities across Manitoba. You'll work on a range of transportation assignments, contributing to project delivery from early planning and functional/preliminary design through detailed design, tender-ready documentation, and construction support.

This position is available in our Winnipeg or Brandon offices, or from a surrounding area (aligned with project and team needs).

Responsibilities

Project Delivery (Design + Construction Support)

  • Serve as a key contributor - and, depending on experience, a design lead-supporting the development of functional, preliminary, and detailed design deliverables for transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Prepare design drawings and models for projects that may include highways, interchanges, arterial roadways, intersections, roundabouts, multi-use trails, transit corridors, all-season roads, and airport ground infrastructure, along with other facilities of similar scope.
  • Develop and maintain design components such as horizontal/vertical alignments, profiles, cross-sections, corridor/earthworks models, grading, drainage concepts/details, and roadway features (e.g., signage and pavement markings as applicable).
  • Produce and QC transportation drawing sets including plan & profile, typical sections, details, quantity summaries, and drawing lists - aligned with client and project CAD standards.
  • Support compilation of deliverables suitable for internal review, client review, and tender-ready contract document packages.
  • Coordinate closely with project managers, engineers, and technologists to ensure designs are practical, buildable, and meet project requirements.
  • Coordinate with utilities, municipalities, approval agencies, and subconsultants to support design development and issue resolution.
  • Support construction-phase services as needed (e.g., responding to RFIs, supporting design clarifications, and assisting with as-built documentation and field coordination).

Technical Leadership & Quality

  • Support and guide junior designers/drafters through task planning, technical direction, coaching, and day-to-day mentorship (scope dependent on experience level).
  • Assist senior staff with quality control, design review support, and document management for drawings and related deliverables.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by refining internal drafting/design workflows, templates, and standards.

Business Development

  • Contribute technical expertise to proposals and business development activities including inputs to RFPs/RFQs, project descriptions, resourcing assumptions, schedules, and technical approach.
  • Support the development and maintenance of strong client relationships through high-quality delivery and effective communication.
  • Travel to other Dillon offices and project sites as required.

Learning & Development

  • Commit to ongoing professional development and continuous learning.
  • Contribute to Dillon's profile through participation in professional associations and committees (as aligned with role and interests).
Qualifications
  • Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology (or related discipline).
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in transportation design/drafting (consulting experience preferred).
  • C.E.T. designation in Manitoba is an asset (or eligibility/intent to pursue designation is an asset).
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while working within a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Experience
  • Proven experience producing transportation design deliverables for MTI and/or municipal roadway projects is a strong asset.
  • Strong understanding of highway/transportation design principles, guidelines, and standards (e.g., geometric design, corridor modeling, and typical roadway details).
  • Demonstrated experience preparing plan & profile drawings, cross-sections, and detail sheets in accordance with project/client CAD standards.
  • Experience with quantity take-offs and supporting estimating through model-based and drawing-based quantities.
  • Proficiency with transportation design/drafting software, such as:
    • AutoCAD / Civil 3D proficiency is strongly preferred (typically required); candidates with advanced Bentley OpenRoads/MicroStation experience may be considered in lieu of AutoCAD proficiency, with the expectation they can adapt to AutoCAD/Civil 3D workflows as needed
    • Bentley platforms (e.g., MicroStation and OpenRoads / InRoads; familiarity with MTI Bentley workflows is an asset)
    • Trimble Business Center and/or GIS tools (asset, where applicable to coordination and data exchange)
    • InfraWorks / visualization tools (asset)
  • Familiarity with construction-phase support, including interpreting contractor inquiries, producing design clarifications, and supporting field coordination is an asset.
  • Experience coordinating with utilities, municipalities, and approval agencies, and integrating requirements into design deliverables is an asset.
