Salaries for experienced civil engineers can vary widely based on location, specialization, and experience, with senior professionals earning over $100,000 annually, but reaching $500,000 is uncommon and usually associated with senior management, consulting, or ownership roles in large projects. Achieving such high earnings generally requires advanced positions, certifications, and extensive experience.

What is the best internship for civil engineering students?

The best internship for civil engineering students typically involves hands-on experience in construction sites, design firms, or government agencies, allowing them to apply technical skills such as AutoCAD, project management, and surveying. Internships that offer exposure to real-world projects, mentorship, and opportunities to earn relevant certifications like OSHA or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) are highly valuable for career development.

What do you do as a civil engineering intern?

A civil engineering intern assists with project planning, design, and analysis by supporting engineers in tasks such as drafting, site inspections, and data collection. They often use tools like AutoCAD and learn about construction processes while gaining practical experience in the field. Internships typically involve supervised work to develop technical skills and industry knowledge.

Is 20 an hour good for an internship?

For a civil engineering intern, $20 an hour is generally considered above average, as internships often pay between $15 and $20 per hour depending on location and company. This rate can reflect the intern's skills, educational level, and the complexity of tasks assigned. Internships at this pay rate may also include opportunities to gain valuable experience with engineering software and site visits.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Civil Engineering Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Engineering Intern, you need foundational knowledge in civil engineering principles, proficiency in mathematics, and progress toward a relevant degree. Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Microsoft Office, as well as understanding of surveying equipment, are typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate effectively and learn from experienced engineers. These competencies are crucial for contributing to projects, ensuring technical accuracy, and gaining valuable hands-on experience in the field.

What types of projects and tasks do Civil Engineering Interns typically work on during their internship?

Civil Engineering Interns often support project teams by assisting with tasks such as drafting design plans, conducting site visits, preparing reports, and performing basic calculations under the supervision of licensed engineers. Interns may be exposed to infrastructure projects like roads, bridges, or water systems, and frequently use software such as AutoCAD or Civil 3D. The role offers hands-on experience with both office and field work, providing a well-rounded introduction to the civil engineering profession.

What does a Civil Engineering Intern do?

A Civil Engineering Intern typically assists professional engineers with tasks such as drafting, site inspections, data collection, and project documentation. They may work on a variety of projects, including roads, bridges, buildings, or water systems, gaining hands-on experience with engineering principles and software. Interns often collaborate with teams, learn to interpret plans and specifications, and help ensure projects meet safety and quality standards. This role provides valuable exposure to real-world engineering practices and helps students or recent graduates develop practical skills for their future careers.

What is the difference between Civil Engineering Intern vs Civil Engineering Technician?

AspectCivil Engineering InternCivil Engineering Technician
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related fieldAssociate degree or diploma in civil engineering technology
Work EnvironmentAssists in design, planning, and project management; often in office and field settingsSupports engineering projects through drafting, surveying, and testing; mainly in field and lab environments
Employer & Industry UsageInternships offered by engineering firms, construction companies, and government agenciesEmployers include engineering consulting firms, construction companies, and public agencies

In summary, Civil Engineering Interns are typically students gaining practical experience during their studies, focusing on learning and assisting with projects. Civil Engineering Technicians are trained professionals who support engineering projects through technical tasks, often with completed technical education. Job description

Position: R&D Engineering Intern

Opportunity Overview:

Technergetics is searching for a full-time (30 to 40 hours per week) research intern for a 3-month engagement to support a Phase I SBIR/STTR R&D effort focused on secure, low-power personnel tracking for edge environments where GPS, cellular, and Wi-Fi can't be relied on. This is hands-on R&D (Research and Development) — protocol design, mesh networking experimentation, and documenting findings that feed directly into a follow-on proposal. Strong performers may be considered for a permanent role at the conclusion of the internship, based on company needs.

Position Details

Pay: $22-$28. The hourly wage is dependent on the amount of schooling and experience of the successful candidate.

This is a remote position. The work may be performed from the successful candidate's home.

There is a minimum work expectation of 30 hours per week and a maximum of 40 hours per week for this position.

The start date is expected to be June 2026.

Due to the contract requirements for this position, only U.S. citizens are eligible to apply.

Responsibilities and Duties

The R&D Engineering Intern will work alongside our Principal Investigator and an academic Co-PI to research and prototype a tracking protocol inspired by military tactical data links, built on top of modern long-range/low-power IoT stacks (LoRa, Meshtastic, Thread).

Daily Activities Include:

  • Researching mesh networking approaches for Denied, Disconnected, Intermittent, and Limited-bandwidth (D-DIL) environments
  • Comparative analysis of LoRaWAN, Meshtastic, Thread, and military tactical data link design principles (TDMA scheduling, anti-jam, time sync)
  • Drafting a notional message format optimized for constrained RF links
  • Evaluating cluster formation strategies (entropy-based weighting, RSSI, residual energy trade-offs)
  • Lightweight crypto evaluation (PKI vs. symmetric key distribution for low-power MCUs)
  • Contributing to the final technical report and follow-on roadmap
  • Assist with tasking under this effort that may not be specifically listed here.

Education and Certifications:

This position requires matriculation in an accredited college or university while pursuing a Master's Degree or a late-stage BS/BA (rising senior or final-year) in computer engineering, electrical engineering or a closely related field.

Required Qualifications:

  • Coursework or project experience in at least two of: wireless communications, embedded systems, networking protocols, or applied cryptography
  • Comfortable with C/C++ and/or Python for embedded and simulation work
  • Strong technical writing — you'll co-author sections of the final report
  • Self-directed; able to plan and execute against weekly milestones in a remote setup

The following qualifications are not required but nice to have:

  • Hands-on experience with LoRa, LoRaWAN, Meshtastic, Thread, BLE, or Zigbee
  • Prior bench prototyping experience with commercial parts such as Semtech SX126x/SX127x, ESP32, STM32, or Nordic SoCs
  • Familiarity with mesh routing, TDMA, or SDR experimentation
  • Exposure to ns-3, OMNeT++, or similar network simulators
  • Interest in defense applications, edge AI, or tactical networking
