Civil Service Title- Civil Engineering Intern
Must be serving permanently in the title, or have filed for exam # 6116, and provide proof.
Under supervision, serves as a Civil Engineer Intern in the Bridge Management Section of the Bureau of Bridge Maintenance, Inspections, and Operations, Division of Bridges. The Division is responsible for the safety, reliability, and long-term serviceability of New York City's bridge infrastructure. Within the Division, the Bridge Management unit connects operational findings (inspections, load ratings, asset inventory) with long-term capital planning to determine which bridge structures require rehabilitation, replacement, component repairs, or special monitoring.
The intern will support the initial implementation, data verification, and effective use of AASHTOWare Bridge Management (BrM) software, helping to maintain accurate bridge inventories, condition tracking, and asset management documentation. This position offers entry-level engineers valuable exposure to bridge inspection data review, deterioration trends, and the municipal capital program development process.
Typical tasks include:
Assist with AASHTOWare BrM implementation, including data entry, documentation updates, and technical quality control.
Review and verify bridge inventory, GIS/location data, and inspection datasets within BrM and related databases to support federal and state compliance.
Perform basic engineering analysis on WNBI/NBI ratings, element-level condition data, and deterioration trends to project rehabilitation/replacement schedules.
Support preliminary structural evaluations by assisting with bridge load rating inputs, calculations, and capacity documentation under the supervision of licensed engineers.
Assist senior staff in compiling data, bridge prioritization lists, and background materials for project scoping packages and capital budget justifications.
Assist in reviewing consultant submissions, standard inspection reports, and maintenance records to identify structures needing further evaluation or restrictions.
Help develop standard operating procedures, checklists, and data workflows for asset management applications.
Coordinate and communicate with Inspection Management, Load Rating, permitting, and inspection field staff to gain cross-functional exposure.
Preferred Skills
Possession of an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is highly desirable.
Strong foundational grasp of structural engineering and basic civil infrastructure concepts.
Ability to work efficiently with software spreadsheets, databases, asset management tools, and GIS applications; familiarity with or interest in AASHTOWare BrM is a plus.
Interest in bridge inspection practices, condition tracking, asset deterioration, and structural plans.
Good written and verbal communication skills for generating summaries and memos, solid organizational habits, and an ability to collaborate effectively across multiple technical teams.
