Job Description

AECOM is seeking an ITS/Traffic Engineer to be based in Dallas, Texas, with Austin, Texas, as a potential alternate location. This position will support public- and private-sector transportation clients in Texas while contributing to technology-focused transportation projects across the United States.

The ITS/Traffic Engineer will work with multidisciplinary teams specializing in traffic engineering, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), connected and automated vehicles (CV/AV) and emerging transportation technologies. The role will support projects through planning, analysis, design, systems integration, operations and maintenance.

This position provides the opportunity to contribute to traditional and advanced transportation technology projects involving ITS infrastructure, traffic operations, advanced signal systems, transportation operations centers, Smart City applications and connected transportation systems. The successful candidate will perform and lead technical tasks under the direction of project managers while coordinating with transportation technology professionals across multiple disciplines and geographic locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform technical tasks supporting ITS, traffic engineering and emerging transportation technology projects under the direction of an experienced project manager.
  • Develop ITS system and device designs, analyses, evaluations and supporting technical documentation.
  • Support connected and automated vehicle projects, including transportation systems analysis, modeling and simulation.
  • Perform traffic engineering studies, traffic impact analyses, operational assessments and recommendations.
  • Develop and evaluate advanced traffic signal systems, active traffic management systems and advanced arterial management applications.
  • Support planning, design and evaluation of transportation operations centers and associated systems.
  • Perform traffic system modeling and simulation using industry-standard software such as VISSIM, TransModeler, TransCAD, Synchro or SimTraffic.
  • Support transportation data analytics, including applications involving artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning where appropriate to project requirements.
  • Develop and maintain geographic information system (GIS)-based transportation analyses and applications using GIS software and Python, as applicable.
  • Prepare systems engineering documentation and technical deliverables supporting transportation technology projects.
  • Prepare technical reports, analyses, design documentation and presentations for clients, project teams and other stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with traffic engineering, ITS, CV/AV and other transportation professionals across multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Support preparation and review of design documents using platforms such as MicroStation and AutoCAD.
  • Perform technical quality reviews and support compliance with applicable project requirements, standards and specifications.
  • Support project managers with technical scope, schedule and budget coordination for assigned tasks.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • BA/BS degree in civil engineering or a related technical field plus 4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in civil engineering, transportation engineering or a related technical field.
  • Experience with connected and automated vehicle technologies, transportation systems or related emerging mobility applications.
  • Traffic engineering and ITS design experience.
  • Experience performing traffic system modeling and simulation using industry-standard software such as VISSIM, TransModeler or TransCAD.
  • Experience providing technical or task-level leadership on transportation projects.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience developing or evaluating advanced traffic signal systems, active traffic management systems or transportation operations center systems.
  • Experience applying artificial intelligence or machine learning techniques to transportation analysis, operations or emerging technology applications.
  • Experience developing systems engineering documentation for ITS or transportation technology projects.
  • Experience with MicroStation and/or AutoCAD.
  • Experience with Synchro and SimTraffic.
  • Experience with GIS applications and Python for transportation data analysis.
  • Experience preparing technical reports and presenting technical findings to clients, agencies or other project stakeholders.
