Civil Engineer Internship information

What is a civil engineer internship?

A Civil Engineer Internship is a temporary position designed to provide students or recent graduates with practical experience in the field of civil engineering. Interns typically assist with project planning, design, site inspections, and technical report writing under the supervision of experienced engineers. This hands-on experience helps develop essential skills and provides exposure to real-world engineering projects. Internships may be offered by construction companies, government agencies, or engineering firms.

What kind of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a civil engineer internship?

As a Civil Engineer Intern, you can expect to assist with a range of tasks such as preparing engineering drawings, conducting site visits, collecting data, and supporting project documentation. Interns often work closely with experienced engineers on real-world projects, including infrastructure design, construction management, or environmental analysis. You may attend team meetings, help prepare reports, and use engineering software to model or analyze components. This hands-on experience provides valuable insight into the workflow of civil engineering teams and helps build foundational skills for future roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a civil engineer internship, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of engineering fundamentals, mathematics, and technical drawing, typically gained through pursuing a civil engineering degree. Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and other design or modeling software, as well as basic knowledge of industry standards, is often expected. Strong analytical thinking, willingness to learn, effective communication, and teamwork skills help you stand out. These competencies are essential for supporting project teams, delivering accurate work, and gaining valuable hands-on experience in the field.

What do you do as a civil engineer internship?

A civil engineer internship involves assisting with the design, planning, and analysis of construction projects such as roads, bridges, and buildings. Interns often support senior engineers by preparing drawings, conducting site inspections, and using software like AutoCAD or Civil 3D to develop project plans. The role provides practical experience in project management, technical skills, and understanding of safety and regulatory standards.

Which internship is best for civil engineer internship students?

The best civil engineering internships are those offered by reputable construction firms, engineering consulting companies, or government agencies that provide hands-on experience with design, surveying, and project management. Internships that include exposure to industry-standard tools like AutoCAD or Civil 3D and offer mentorship can enhance skill development and job readiness.

At LAURIN, we don’t just build structures — we build careers and communities. Since 1985, we’ve earned a reputation for excellence in construction and project management by delivering projects that matter and supporting the people who make them happen.

We’re seeking a Construction Co-op Student who is eager to turn classroom learning into meaningful project experience. This opportunity is ideal for a motivated student who wants broad exposure to field operations, project coordination, quality, safety, scheduling, and construction documentation while learning from an experienced project team.

Why Join LAURIN?

A co-op term at LAURIN is more than a line on your résumé — it’s an opportunity to learn how complex construction projects come together, contribute meaningful work, and build relationships with experienced industry professionals.

  • Competitive hourly compensation that recognizes your academic progress and relevant experience.
  • Meaningful, hands-on experience supporting active construction projects.
  • Practical exposure to field operations, project coordination, quality, safety, scheduling, and document control.
  • Guidance and mentorship from experienced project management and site professionals.
  • Opportunities to apply classroom learning to real construction challenges and deliverables.
  • Regular feedback and support to help you develop technical skills, professional judgment, and confidence.
  • Inclusive, safety-first culture where questions, learning, and new perspectives are welcomed.
  • Opportunity to build your professional network and be considered for future co-op or full-time roles.

Your Impact at LAURIN

As a Construction Co-op Student, you will work alongside our project management and site teams to support the day-to-day coordination of active construction projects. You’ll gain practical experience with field documentation, trade coordination, quantity tracking, inspections, scheduling, and safety while contributing to work that directly supports successful project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Superintendent with workforce planning and coordination of upcoming site activities.
  • Document field records related to quality, production, labour, materials, and daily project activities.
  • Maintain project document-control systems and follow established procedures for accurate, current records.
  • Support the project team in coordinating trade contractors, including requests for information (RFIs), shop drawings, changes, and billings.
  • Assist with the supervision of self-perform scopes, including labour, production, and quantity tracking.
  • Prepare quantity takeoffs from drawings and specifications to support planning, procurement, and project controls.
  • Assist with updating drawings, specifications, site documentation, and record information as work progresses.
  • Identify and communicate potential issues observed on site or within defined work scopes, and assist the project team with follow-up.
  • Coordinate third-party inspections and site reviews under the direction of the project team.
  • Participate in basic safety inspections and training, promptly report hazards, and model safe work practices and procedures.
  • Assist with schedule updates, short-term planning, and monitoring progress against project milestones.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with project team members, trade partners, consultants, clients, and other stakeholders.
  • Take initiative in learning company systems, construction processes, and project-delivery practices throughout the work term.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a diploma or degree program in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Eligible to complete a formal co-op or internship work term through a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Basic ability to read construction drawings and specifications; previous construction, site, or project experience is an asset.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to maintain accurate records and follow established processes.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills and a professional, collaborative approach when working with diverse project stakeholders.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook; exposure to construction-management, drawing, or scheduling software is an asset.
  • Curious, dependable, and proactive, with a willingness to ask questions, accept feedback, and take ownership of assigned work.
  • Comfort working in an active construction environment and a demonstrated commitment to quality and safe work practices.
  • Ability to travel to and work from an assigned project site; a valid driver’s licence and access to reliable transportation may be required depending on the placement.

Education & Professional Credentials

  • Active enrolment in a Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or comparable post-secondary program is required.
  • Relevant academic projects, student leadership, safety training, or prior co-op, site, or construction experience will be considered assets.

Eligibility & Security Requirements

At LAURIN, many of our projects require specific employment and security conditions. To be considered, candidates must:

  • Be legally authorized to work in Canada. Please note that LAURIN does not provide or assume sponsorship for work permits or visas.
  • Be eligible to obtain and maintain Government of Canada Reliability Status security clearance (Secret clearance is considered an asset).
