What is a civil engineer inspector?

Civil Engineer Inspectors are professionals responsible for ensuring that construction projects comply with design specifications, codes, and safety standards. They inspect various aspects of civil engineering projects, such as roads, bridges, and buildings, to verify the quality of materials and workmanship. Their duties often include reviewing plans, observing construction processes, documenting findings, and coordinating with contractors and engineers to resolve issues. Civil Engineer Inspectors play a crucial role in maintaining public safety and project integrity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a civil engineer inspector, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Engineer Inspector, you need a solid understanding of civil engineering principles, construction materials, and building codes, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field. Familiarity with inspection software, CAD systems, and relevant certifications such as NICET or state licensure are often required. Attention to detail, strong communication, and problem-solving skills are essential soft skills for ensuring project compliance and working with contractors. These skills and qualifications are vital to uphold safety standards, project quality, and regulatory compliance throughout construction projects.

What are some common challenges faced by civil engineer inspectors during construction projects?

Civil Engineer Inspectors often encounter challenges such as coordinating between multiple contractors, ensuring compliance with evolving regulations, and addressing unexpected site conditions. They must be adept at problem-solving on the spot and maintaining clear, professional communication with project managers, engineers, and construction crews. Staying current with codes and standards, as well as managing documentation efficiently, are also crucial for keeping projects on track and within specifications.

Job description

Why Join Giga

  • The Pace: We're building at a speed most companies talk about but never actually operate at. If you've been bored somewhere else, you won't be here.
  • The Impact: Every person at Giga touches the work that matters. No layers, no waiting for approval chains. You'll see your fingerprints on what we ship.
  • The Team: A team of operators defining the future of AI infrastructure. We recruit A-players from the most innovative companies in the world, and they choose Giga because the work here means more.
  • The Moment: AI doesn't run without power, and that's us. Giga is the picks and shovels behind the AI revolution. This industry is about to explode, and you'll be in the room where it's already happening.

What you'll do

We are seeking a Civil Engineer to contribute to the full lifecycle of our site development projects, from initial feasibility through construction execution. You will support site assessments, design development, and compliance activities under mentorship from senior engineers. The ideal candidate has hands-on CAD skills and is comfortable working both at the desk and on construction sites.

Where you'll work

We are an in-office culture - velocity matters when you're building physical infrastructure, and the best decisions happen in the room. This role is ideally based in our San Francisco, Long Beach, or Houston offices, with full-time onsite expectations outside of bi-weekly WFH Fridays.

That said, we will make exceptions for truly exceptional talent if you live outside one of our hubs. If you're the right person for this role, we'll have a conversation about what works.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing site layouts, including grading plans, drainage systems, utility routing, and foundation design under senior engineer guidance.
  • Conduct site assessments, gather geotechnical data, and contribute to environmental impact studies to support project viability determinations.
  • Research and apply local zoning laws and building codes; support the permitting process with municipal and state agencies.
  • Contribute to project schedules and budgets; assist with vendor coordination under senior oversight.
  • Support structural calculations for specialized equipment housing (e.g., pads for cooling units, heavy electrical infrastructure).
  • Perform site inspections to verify construction alignment with engineering specifications and safety standards; document findings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • 2-4 years of experience in land development, industrial construction, or data center infrastructure.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit, or similar BIM software.
  • Working knowledge of hydrology, soil mechanics, and reinforced concrete design.
  • PE license preferred but not required.

Bonus points

  • Familiarity with critical infrastructure requirements (Power, Cooling, and Fiber connectivity).
  • Strong communication skills for coordinating with internal teams and stakeholders.
Who We Hire:

We hire people who thrive in chaos and get sharper under pressure. You don't wait to be told what to do, you spot the gap and fill it. When there's work to be done, you do it. You make decisions with the information you have, move fast, and adjust along the way. We're not looking for perfect; we're looking for people who get things done.

  • Equity (options) in a rapidly growing startup
  • 401(k) with 4% employer match
  • Unlimited PTO
