Civil Engineer In Training Eit information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a civil engineer in training EIT, and why are they important?

A Civil Engineer In Training (EIT) needs a solid foundation in mathematics, engineering principles, and problem-solving, typically backed by a relevant engineering degree and passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and structural analysis tools is highly beneficial. Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills help EITs collaborate effectively and manage project documentation. These competencies are critical for accurate project design, regulatory compliance, and successful progression to licensed professional engineer status.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as a civil engineer in training EIT?

As a Civil Engineer In Training (EIT), you will typically support licensed engineers on a range of projects such as roadway design, site development, structural analysis, or water resources management. Your daily tasks may include preparing engineering drawings, conducting field inspections, assisting with project estimates, and performing calculations under supervision. You’ll often collaborate closely with project managers, senior engineers, and drafting technicians, gaining exposure to different phases of the project lifecycle. This role is designed to help you develop technical skills, understand regulatory requirements, and build experience toward professional licensure.

What is a civil engineer in training EIT?

Civil Engineers In Training (EITs) are individuals who have earned a degree in civil engineering and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, but have not yet obtained a Professional Engineer (PE) license. EITs typically work under the supervision of licensed engineers, gaining hands-on experience required for licensure. Their responsibilities can include assisting with project design, preparing reports, conducting site inspections, and performing calculations. Becoming an EIT is an important step towards becoming a fully licensed professional engineer (PE) in the civil engineering field.

Overview

As a Project Consultant for Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. (CEC) in our Boston, MA office, you will work with project teams to create permitting and construction plans, municipal zoning and land development applications for our private and public sector clients. From port facilities to multi-family housing and distribution centers to retail shopping centers, you'll take part in designing site layouts and grading, erosion and sedimentation controls, storm water management facilities, and site utilities. You will work with Assistant Project Managers and Project Managers to execute projects, and you will have the opportunity to interact with clients, contractors, and local government officials. Applicants will have an option to sit in either our Raynham, MA or Peabody, MA office locations.

At CEC, our employees enjoy a flexible/hybrid work schedule. Our comprehensive benefits package includes bonus recognition, based on performance, as well as participation in our employee stock ownership program. Additionally, we conduct mid-year and end-of-year performance reviews and provide goal-setting opportunities.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
  • 2+ years of professional engineering experience
  • Engineering In Training (EIT) certification preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, HydroCAD, or Storm Sewers a plus
