Civil Engineer In Training Eit information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Civil Engineer In Training (EIT), and why are they important?

A Civil Engineer In Training (EIT) needs a solid foundation in mathematics, engineering principles, and problem-solving, typically backed by a relevant engineering degree and passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and structural analysis tools is highly beneficial. Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills help EITs collaborate effectively and manage project documentation. These competencies are critical for accurate project design, regulatory compliance, and successful progression to licensed professional engineer status.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as a Civil Engineer In Training (EIT)?

As a Civil Engineer In Training (EIT), you will typically support licensed engineers on a range of projects such as roadway design, site development, structural analysis, or water resources management. Your daily tasks may include preparing engineering drawings, conducting field inspections, assisting with project estimates, and performing calculations under supervision. You’ll often collaborate closely with project managers, senior engineers, and drafting technicians, gaining exposure to different phases of the project lifecycle. This role is designed to help you develop technical skills, understand regulatory requirements, and build experience toward professional licensure.

What are Civil Engineer In Training (EIT) professionals?

Civil Engineers In Training (EITs) are individuals who have earned a degree in civil engineering and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, but have not yet obtained a Professional Engineer (PE) license. EITs typically work under the supervision of licensed engineers, gaining hands-on experience required for licensure. Their responsibilities can include assisting with project design, preparing reports, conducting site inspections, and performing calculations. Becoming an EIT is an important step towards becoming a fully licensed professional engineer (PE) in the civil engineering field.

  • Create and refine site plans using AutoCAD Civil 3D under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Apply knowledge of grading and drainage to support site development and infrastructure design.
  • Use AutoCAD Civil 3D and hydrology modeling software to produce engineering drawings, plans, and related documents.
  • Prepare technical reports, memorandums, and supporting documentation under the supervision of experienced engineers.
  • Collaborate closely with clients, architects, contractors, and government agencies to support project coordination and approvals.
  • Support project managers with day-to-day project tasks, including scheduling, documentation, and communication.
  • Assist in overseeing construction activities, including reviewing plans, tracking progress, and helping address field issues as they arise.
  • Participate in mentorship and training activities to build technical, professional, and project management skills.
  • Contribute to a culture of ownership, collaboration, and community engagement within the project team.
  • Travel to project sites and meetings as needed to support design, coordination, and construction activities.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT or EI) certification, or the ability to obtain certification within 12 months.
  • Fundamental understanding of civil engineering principles related to site planning, infrastructure, grading, and drainage.
  • Ability to perform the creation of site plans in Civil 3D or similar design tools, or the aptitude and willingness to develop this skill.
  • Knowledge of grading and drainage concepts in site development and their application in design.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with team members and external partners.
  • Solid problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze issues and contribute to practical engineering solutions.
  • Attention to detail and a proactive mindset in both design tasks and project coordination.
  • Collaborative spirit and desire to grow within a team-oriented environment.
  • Willingness to travel for work as needed and possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Genuine passion for site planning, infrastructure, and contributing to community improvement through engineering work.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D is preferred and considered a plus; training and support will be provided to build proficiency.
  • Familiarity with hydrology modeling software or related tools used in drainage and stormwater design is beneficial.
  • Interest in preparing technical reports, memorandums, and supporting documentation for engineering projects.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with a strong sense of urgency and ownership.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships within a small team and with project stakeholders.
  • Motivation to seek mentorship, accept feedback, and continuously develop technical and professional skills.
  • Enthusiasm for working on diverse, impactful projects that support local communities and various market sectors.
