Job description

Description Join the City of Flagstaff Public Works Division as a Public Works Supervisor and lead a dedicated Custodial team that helps keep the facilities serving our community clean, safe, and welcoming every day. In this key leadership role, you will have full responsibility for supervising personnel within the assigned custodial program, including planning, assigning, and organizing daily work activities to ensure efficient and effective operations. The Public Works Supervisor - Custodial oversees staff development and workforce management by interviewing candidates, making recommendations on hiring and promotions, conducting performance evaluations, and providing ongoing coaching and support.

Examples of the Work Performed EXAMPLES OF THE WORK PERFORMED Supervises, assigns, schedules, and evaluates custodial staff across assigned city facilities; recommends personnel actions including hiring, discipline, and termination Conducts regular performance evaluations; identifies and addresses performance issues; develops corrective action plans as needed Provides onboarding, on-the-job training, and ongoing professional development for custodial employees Prepares and processes timesheets, leave requests, and attendance records; ensures accurate recordkeeping in city systems Conducts regular staff safety meetings and facility inspections, documents attendance, findings, and corrective actions Develops, updates, and implements standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) for custodial functions and equipment Manages and tracks custodial work orders from initiation through completion using city work order management systems, coordinates scheduling and priority assignment with Facilities staff Monitors facility conditions and assigns corrective work; identifies maintenance needs and coordinates with Facilities Maintenance staff or outside vendors for repair resolution Coordinates with internal city departments and external vendors on equipment issues, supply needs, and service delivery Assists with oversight of outside custodial vendors and contractors; monitors contract compliance with City terms and conditions, performance standards, and scope of work Reviews vendor invoices for accuracy; processes and signs off on invoices in accordance with city purchasing procedures Solicits quotes for custodial supplies and services; participates in the city's purchasing and requisition process Coordinates with Purchasing on contract administration and vendor performance issues Operates City vehicles to support custodial operations, including transporting equipment and supplies, responding to facility service needs, and completing required vehicle inspections and documentation.

Assists the Facilities Maintenance Superintendent with development and monitoring of the custodial section operating budget, tracks expenditures and reports variances Participates in long-range planning for custodial staffing, equipment replacement, and capital needs Ensures all custodial operations comply with applicable federal, state, and local regulations including Occupational Safety Health administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPS), and city safety policies Oversees the proper handling, storage, and disposal of cleaning chemicals and hazardous materials in accordance with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) requirements and regulatory standards Maintains required safety data sheets and ensures accessibility for all custodial staff Participates in the city's safety program; may serve on the Public Works Safety Committee as assigned Serves as acting supervisor for the Facilities Maintenance section in the absence of the Facilities Maintenance Manager and/or Superintendent, as assigned; assists with scheduling, work dispatching, and operational coordination during coverage periods Assists Facilities Maintenance Manager and Superintendent with preparation of reports, correspondence, and documentation required by city administration Provides excellent customer service to internal and external customers; resolves difficult service complaints and escalated issues Performs custodial duties alongside staff as needed to meet operational demands Performs related duties as assigned To review the full job description, click here: https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/flagstaff/classspecs/1850039?keywords=public%20works%20supervisor&pagetype=classSpecifications Qualifications MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Associate's degree or technical degree Three (3) years of experience related to area of assignment with custodial equipment operation, inventory, warehouse management, including two (2) years of safety and training experience Three (3) years of supervisory experience Valid driver's license Or any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements. DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING Experience in supervising custodial or facilities maintenance operations in a municipal, institutional, or large commercial setting.
