What is a CIT counselor?

CIT Counselors, or Counselors-in-Training, are typically older campers or young adults who are learning to become camp counselors. They assist full counselors in supervising campers, leading activities, and ensuring a safe, fun camp environment. CIT programs are designed to teach leadership, responsibility, and practical skills needed for future roles as full counselors. Participants gain hands-on experience working with children and develop valuable teamwork and communication abilities.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a CIT counselor?

To thrive as a CIT (Crisis Intervention Team) Counselor, you need a background in psychology, social work, or a related field, often supported by a relevant degree and crisis intervention training. Familiarity with mental health assessment tools, case management systems, and certifications like CIT or Mental Health First Aid is typically required. Strong communication, active listening, and de-escalation skills set exceptional counselors apart in high-stress situations. These competencies are critical for providing effective crisis support, ensuring safety, and connecting individuals to appropriate resources.

What challenges do CIT counselors face when working with campers, and how can they address them?

CIT Counselors often encounter challenges such as managing group dynamics among campers, addressing homesickness, and facilitating conflict resolution. It's important to foster an inclusive environment, use active listening, and encourage open communication to help campers feel comfortable and supported. Building trust with campers and collaborating closely with senior staff and other counselors also helps in addressing issues promptly and effectively. Developing strong leadership and problem-solving skills is key to handling these challenges successfully.

What is the difference between Cit Counselor vs Mental Health Counselor?
