Both roles require specific certifications but serve distinct industries and functions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), you need a solid background in occupational health, chemistry, biology, and safety, typically supported by a relevant science degree and CIH certification. Familiarity with industrial hygiene sampling equipment, analytical methods, and regulatory systems like OSHA and NIOSH is essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills distinguish top performers in this field. These skills ensure accurate hazard identification, regulatory compliance, and the protection of worker health in various workplace environments.

What is a CIH?

CIH stands for Certified Industrial Hygienist. These professionals are experts in identifying, evaluating, and controlling workplace environmental hazards that could affect worker health and safety. CIHs assess risks related to chemical, biological, physical, and ergonomic hazards, and recommend solutions to minimize exposure. They often work in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and construction to ensure compliance with occupational health regulations.

What are some common challenges faced by Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIHs) when implementing workplace health and safety programs?

Certified Industrial Hygienists often encounter challenges such as securing management buy-in for health and safety initiatives and addressing employee concerns about new protocols. They must balance regulatory compliance with practical workplace realities, often needing to tailor solutions to diverse environments. CIHs also frequently collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, requiring strong communication skills to ensure everyone understands and implements recommended practices. Staying updated with evolving regulations and emerging hazards is another key aspect of the role.

The Opportunity

A service-driven paper and packaging products company, Atlantic Packaging has grown to become one of Canada’s largest paper manufacturers and a leading producer of packaging products.  We are looking for a Director, Health & Safety.  This position is responsible for overseeing health and safety in all plants within the Atlantic Group of Companies.  Atlantic Packaging has locations in Ontario, Quebec and in the United States.  This role is based at Atlantic’s head office in Scarborough, Ontario.

What You’ll Do

Strategy Development & Leadership

  • Vision & Culture: Provides leadership in developing, communicating, and implementing a vision for occupational health and safety within the organization.
  • Corporate Governance: Responsible for the development, review, and delivery of company-wide Health and Safety policies and programs.
  • External Representation: Represents Atlantic Packaging Group of Companies on industry-related advisory committees (e.g., Workplace Safety North FPPCP Advisory Committee, Fibre Box Association H&S Committee).
  • Strategic Risk Management: Conducts macro-level risk assessments to minimize workplace incidents, occupational illnesses, or long-term health hazards.

Regulatory Compliance & Legal Governance

  • Multi-Jurisdictional Frameworks: Facilitates a safety management system complying with Ontario's OHSA, Quebec's CNESST requirements, alongside US OSHA standards.
  • Regional Committees & Task Forces: Leads Ontario's WSIB H&S Excellence program and Dock Safety Task Force; strategically oversees Quebec’s mandatory Prevention Program (Programme de prévention) and Interim Mechanisms.
  • Legal Proceedings: Manages, advises, and represents the organization in any safety-related legal proceedings

Continuous Improvement, Data Analytics & Incident Management

  • Auditing & Inspection: Performs safety audits and physical inspections of work areas to proactively identify hazards.
  • Gap Analysis: Conducts gap analyses of existing programs and develops robust action plans to remedy non-conformance issues.
  • Data & Analytics: Analyzes safety data to determine trends and statistics, compiling monthly/annual safety reports for executive management.
  • Investigation & CAPA: Leads or advises on incident investigations, ensuring root causes are found and Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) are fully completed.

Team Development & Safety Training

  • Training Management: Manages the company-wide H&S Training program, facilitating specialized training sessions or safety drills when necessary.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborates effectively with all levels of the organization, ensuring the right stakeholders are informed, involved, and aligned.
  • Leading and developing a high-performing team of Health & Safety professionals in ON, QC and US.

What You Bring

  • Industry Experience: Minimum 10+ years leading health and safety specifically within a unionized manufacturing setting.
  • Academic Baseline: Bachelor’s degree in OHS, Engineering, Kinesiology, HR, or Business (or an alternate Bachelor's degree + a post-graduate OHS diploma).
  • Professional Designation: Must hold a recognized designation (CRSP/CSP highly preferred; COHN, CCPE, or CIH accepted).
  • Mobility: Must possess a valid driver’s license and independent transportation for local travel.
  • Operational Style: Strong desire to be hands-on and "on the floor" rather than strictly behind a desk.
  • Language Proficiency: Bilingualism (French/English) is highly preferred to manage the Quebec portfolio effectively.
  • Technical Tools: Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and working knowledge of specialized safety management software.

What We Offer
