Position Overview
Level 4 (Principal) Network Installation Technician position will effectively interface with customer points of contact, perform highly detailed technical tasks, and lead Network Installation Technician field teams in the performance of site activities. Provide the focused leadership necessary to ensure project completion and to assess, guide and mentor Network Installation Technicians to improve the quality of their workmanship as well as their progress along the technical learning curve.
Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the planning and completion of the most complex and detailed technical projects from survey and engineering to site implementation.
  • Develop and maintain high standards of installation and service, and assist with leading, training, and counsel network installation technicians toward high performance.
  • Serve as a technical knowledge resource and company interface to the customer base
  • Provide proactive and responsive customer focused leadership, reaching back to corporate resources where necessary, to communicate status, mitigate risks and resolve any issues that may arise in the field.
  • Work directly with Project Managers as the first line of communication for the field installation teams supporting the PM's project(s).
  • Work with Master Scheduler to recommend and assign appropriate personnel to specific projects.
  • Take responsibility for the development and assessment of all field deliverables prior to being formally submitted to the Project Manager.
  • Maintain accountability for the task-oriented work efforts of project assigned personnel
  • Help ensure production schedules are met or exceeded.
  • Working with Field Support leadership, helping to set employee objectives, assess performance, contribute to annual reviews, and provide guidance to assist in improving areas of technical weakness.
  • Lead by example.

Technical Training:
  • Help to assess employee skill levels and abilities.
  • Provide feedback to improve individual and team productivity.
  • Provide input to the Training/QA Group to assist with the formation of procedural documentation for field tasks - BER testing, platform configurations, deliverables, procedures, etc.
  • Work closely with the Training/QA Group to develop training for installation standards, general telecom skills, Telcordia installation techniques, safe power procedures, site safety, and best industry practices.
  • Provide training on completing site surveys to create detailed and accurate site survey reports
  • Focus on skill set development specific to high profile projects such as Ciena 6500, RLS and Waveserver, as well as Cisco DWDM, and other specialized platforms.
  • Help ensure that team members are adequately trained and equipped with the tools necessary to succeed.
  • Prepare and provide complex site reports, documents, diagrams and VISIO drawings as required to meet customer deliverable requirements. Train and certify others to develop proficiency at same.
  • Help instill operational and field quality expectations within the base of network installation technicians such that the overall perception of and confidence in By Light site work continues to trend upward.

Field Assistance:
  • In coordination with Engineering, provide project design support where needed and requested to meet customer objectives.
  • Join in with joint Engineering-Field Service teams in the field to accomplish high-priority tasking
  • Maintain high standards of installation services and help instill in assigned field techs.
  • Provide onsite and remote technical directions, in support of system's deployment, configuration, commissioning, and testing.
  • Monitor assigned project and task issues, developing resolutions to meet the schedule, quality, and client-satisfaction goals and objectives
  • Provide onsite direction at the start of complex or large tasks to get the teams started properly
  • Provide a single point of contact for all field related issues
  • Help establish more effective remote support solutions to allow junior technicians to develop essential system deployment skills with direct and immediate support.
  • In coordination with the Training/QA group, conduct in-process and final job quality assurance inspections to ensure quality customer deliverables.
  • Coordinate with Logistics and outside vendors to resolve equipment delivery issues, shortages and shipment of additional supplies and materials.

Administration:
  • Help with assessment, monitoring and facilitation of team member professional growth.
  • Assist with quarterly and annual personnel evaluations.
  • Assist with development of objectives and goals for each team member.
  • Evaluate team members and make recommendations for realignment of teams to increase productivity and efficiency.
  • Help with the review of Site Completion Reports and Daily Status Reports.
  • Coordinate with Engineering Management on changes and updates to engineering and technical documents.

Planning:
  • Participate in the bi-weekly scheduling meetings and coordinate with Project Managers to meet company and customer objectives.
  • Evaluate and help align scheduling priorities in concurrence with Project Managers based on project timelines and customer requirements.
  • Assist with the scheduling of assignments and activities of appropriate individual team members.
  • Help to coordinate logistical requirements including equipment, test sets, travel arrangements.

Required Experience/Qualifications
  • 6+ years experience directly related to Ciena 6500 and/or RLS,Waverserver platforms.
  • Previous experience leading and implementation team or teams

Special Requirements/Security Clearance
  • Active Secret clearance; or ability to obtain and maintain
  • Candidates may be based anywhere in the US but must be open to at least 70% travel to CONUS and OCONUS locations as necessary.
