JOB OVERVIEW: CONTRACT ARBORIST – UTILITY VEG. MANAGEMENT

The Contract Arborist – Utility Vegetation Management (UVM) supports utility vegetation management operations by helping ensure the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of electric distribution and transmission systems. This role partners with vegetation management leadership, contractors, customers, and landowners to identify vegetation-related risks, oversee field activities, and support the planning and execution of vegetation management work across utility rights-of-way.


The position contributes directly to system reliability, public safety, regulatory compliance, and customer satisfaction by providing field-based assessments, contractor oversight, and effective stakeholder communication in support of overall vegetation management objectives.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Vegetation Management & Field Operations

  • Conduct Rights-of-Way (ROW) patrols and perform vegetation and electrical clearance assessments for distribution and transmission facilities.
  • Identify, document, and communicate vegetation-related risks and potential threats to utility infrastructure.
  • Support the planning, scheduling, and execution of vegetation management activities in accordance with operational standards.

Contractor Oversight & Quality Assurance

  • Provide field oversight of contract vegetation management crews.
  • Perform safety observations, worksite inspections, and quality evaluations to ensure work meets specifications and safety requirements.
  • Communicate observations, findings, and performance-related issues to appropriate vegetation management leadership.

Customer & Landowner Relations

  • Meet with customers and landowners to explain vegetation management work and address questions or concerns before, during, and after work completion.
  • Maintain a professional and customer-focused approach when representing vegetation management operations in the field.

Planning, Budgeting & Administrative Support

  • Assist with budgeting, planning, and scheduling of vegetation management work.
  • Use computer and mobile applications to document inspections, track work progress, and support reporting needs.
  • Develop working knowledge of basic business concepts, including budgeting and financial processes, as related to vegetation management activities.

Safety & Emergency Response

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety for self, contractors, and the public.
  • Support storm response and emergency restoration efforts, including extended hours and travel as required.



REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry, Horticulture, or a related field.

Experience

  • Experience or demonstrated knowledge in vegetation management, arboriculture, forestry, or related field operations.
  • Experience working with field crews or contractors is preferred.

Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of tree species, growth rates, and vegetation characteristics common to the assigned work area.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound, timely decisions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated customer service focus.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage schedules, meet critical deadlines, and prioritize work.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to operate effectively in a field-driven environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and mobile device applications.
  • Ability to interact professionally with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Licenses / Certifications

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident required.
  • ISA Certified Arborist and/or ISA Utility Specialist preferred.

Required Training

  • Completion of required safety, compliance, and operational training.
  • Storm response and emergency preparedness training as required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications.
  • Prior experience supporting utility vegetation management programs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Combination of field-based and administrative work.
  • Regular outdoor work in varying weather and terrain conditions.
  • Frequent interaction with contractors, customers, and landowners.
  • Travel within the assigned region required; occasional overnight or broader travel may be necessary.
  • Availability for emergency response, including non-standard hours during storm or restoration events.
