Job description

JOB TITLE:Lead Produce Clerk

DEPARTMENT:005 - Produce

JOB STATUS:Non-Exempt

REPORTS TO:Produce Manager, Store Director, Management Staff

Starting rate of pay: $21.12/hr


Under the direction of the department head and/or manager, the Lead Produce Clerk provides customers with friendly and efficient service. The Lead Produce Clerk unloads, receives, warehouses, prices, stocks, faces merchandise. Prepares and posts signs and labels to ensure proper pricing for the merchandise. Operates cash registers as necessary. Provides assistance with the ordering and inventory of the merchandise, housekeeping, security and safety standards of the department. 


  1. Provides friendly and courteous service to the customers. Maintains knowledge of the various produce items. Answers and responds to the customer's questions and inquiries about various produce items. Obtains assistance from a supervisor or manager if unable to resolve any customer inquiry or special request. Stays abreast of store specials and sales to better service the customer. Takes the customer to the location of product(s) in question. Offers samples to customers as appropriate.
  2. Prepares, trims, cleans, culls, merchandises, displays and rotates merchandise to ensure freshness. Checks the quality of the products on the shelves. Stocks and resets shelves. Cuts fruits for displays. Makes fruit baskets. Checks the floral area to ensure merchandise is fresh and stocked. Assists with Christmas tree sales.  
  3. Receives, unloads, warehouses, prices, labels, stocks and faces merchandise. Assists in the ordering, inventory and documentation of merchandise. Ensures the quality of all merchandise. Writes out credit and transfer slips, orders supplies, takes monthly and daily inventory and calls in merchandise orders. Prepares and posts signs and labels to ensure proper pricing for the merchandise. Builds and takes down displays. Executes price changes. Checks for price discrepancies and notifies the Price Coordinator.
  4. Assists in the maintenance of the department. Waters greens. Sweeps, scrubs and mops the warehouse. Wipes chrome and mirrors. Disposes of unsightly rubbish and debris from the area. Empties the baler.
  5. Processes the customer's purchases at the checkout line. Accurately and efficiently scans items utilizing a computerized register. Handles cash, check and electronic banking transactions. The cashier is held accountable for the assigned till to include organizing (cash and non-cash items) and meeting cash handling standards. Provides personalized service to each customer. Bags all merchandise purchased by the customers. Ensures all merchandise is carefully bagged effectively and efficiently to prevent breakage. Ensures all purchased merchandise is in the customer's possession. Offers and/or arranges carry out service to customers.  
  6. Pursues professional developmental opportunities and contributes to the Corporate goals.
  7. Performs all other miscellaneous responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Essential Requirements:

  1. Education: High school diploma or GED preferred. Must be able to read and write at a high school competency level. 
  2. Work Experience: Customer service and/or cash handling experience preferred.
  3. Work Hours: Be available to work various days and shifts. Some overtime hours may be required.
  4. Other Requirements:
  • Proven ability to converse in English on a one-to-one basis.  
  • Ability to read, and comprehend department guidelines and procedures. Ability to write in clear and understandable manner.
  • Ability to distinguish numeric and alphanumeric code sequences.
  • Ability to meet minimum score requirement on prescreening test.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age upon employment. 
  • Must be able to visually recognize, hear, acknowledge and converse with a supervisor, co-worker, or customer at a reasonable distance with a corrective and/or supplemental aid if needed.
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks.
