Campus Location: Ott Hall of Sciences & Nursing, Marion, IN
Summary of Position: The Wildcat Farm Horticulture Intern position serves the Wildcat Farm in the capacity determined by the director and Wildcat Farm Manager. A responsibility of the intern is to supervise cultivator apprentices to ensure farm tasks are accomplished in a timely manner. Tasks include daily maintenance of the vegetable and perennial gardens, monitoring insect pests and nutrient management. The Horticulture Intern will also provide basic greenhouse support, planting, watering and pruning as needed. They will oversee harvest and help prepare Farm Boxes weekly. The Horticulture Intern will supervise high school interns, teach them gardening skills and transport them to local gardens. The Horticulture Intern must adhere to all safety regulations and IWU safety policy. The Horticulture Intern must comply with any processes and procedures established by Indiana Wesleyan University administration.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with a variety of community garden tasks and projects, consisting of both hands-on outdoor work and indoor administrative tasks
  • Supervise the high school cultivator apprentices in their garden tasks and projects
  • Build and foster the sense of community at our gardens, including but not limited to planning and facilitating garden events, workdays, and workshops
  • Assist with planting, maintenance, and harvesting of Thriving vegetable garden
  • Assist with planting, maintenance, and harvesting of Mississinewa School gardens
  • Assist with mowing, weed-whacking, and other regular garden maintenance
  • Assist with communications and outreach to community gardeners and volunteers
  • Assist with marketing, website support, social media and audio/visual content generation
Qualifications: According to Indiana Wesleyan University employment policy all employees must possess a strong Christian commitment and adhere to the standards outlined in the IWU Community Lifestyle Statement.
Education
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's of Science degree in a related field and one year of working in the horticultural field is preferred
Experience
  • Proven ability to complete assigned tasks and projects; meet deadlines; and manage multiple tasks
Required Skills
  • Capability to supervise others (including apprentices and volunteers) with daily garden tasks
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry 40 lb. Carrying bags of soil, transferring mulch, planting, and heavy lifting are all regular aspects of this position. Work is primarily outdoors, therefore, candidate must also have the ability to and be willing to work in a variety of conditions including heat, cold and rain
