Editors working in this field typically handle books, articles, devotionals, sermons, and other faith-based materials to ensure clarity, doctrinal soundness, and readability. They may also offer feedback on scriptural references, theological consistency, and tone to maintain alignment with Christian beliefs. This role requires a deep understanding of Christian teachings, strong language skills, and sensitivity to the intended audience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Christian Editing position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Christian Editing, a strong grasp of grammar, biblical literacy, and familiarity with Christian doctrine or denominational perspectives is essential, often supported by a background in English, theology, or communications. Familiarity with publishing software such as Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign, or specialized editorial content management systems is highly beneficial. Attention to detail, clear communication, and cultural sensitivity are valued soft skills that help editors collaborate effectively with authors and ministry teams. These skills ensure that content is both theologically accurate and engaging for faith-based audiences, maintaining the integrity and mission of the publication.

What are the main responsibilities of a Christian Editor on a day-to-day basis?

As a Christian Editor, your typical day involves reviewing manuscripts, devotionals, or curricula for theological accuracy, readability, and alignment with a specific faith tradition or organizational goals. You will provide constructive feedback to authors, suggest revisions, and proofread final drafts to ensure grammatical and doctrinal consistency. Collaboration with writers, pastors, and publishing teams is common, requiring strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset. While multitasking between editing, meetings, and content management is often necessary, your efforts play a critical role in shaping materials that inspire and inform the Christian community.

Job description

The Communication Specialist is a writer and editor who can balance the energy and drive of content marketing to prospective students and alumni with the detailed work of editing academic content and sharing institutional data.

The Communication Specialist serves as a connector between the various team members across marketing, communication, design, social media, conference, and events. This position combines creative storytelling, inbound marketing, and event operations to ensure that every message, gathering, and interaction with university stakeholders and guests reflects the institution’s mission and commitment to excellence.

The person in this role thrives on creating valuable experiences that feel thoughtful and personal — anticipating needs, solving problems before or when they arise, and communicating with clarity and warmth in a customer-focused way. This is a dynamic role for someone who takes pride in details, loves working with people, and finds joy in helping others shine.

Content Marketing

  • Write and edit content for marketing materials, newsletters, and digital campaigns to ensure all messaging is relevant, engaging, and aligned with institutional goals.
  • Support institutional storytelling through research, interviews, and feature writing that highlight the impact and vibrancy of the campus community.
  • Complete special projects as assigned.

Good News Strategy

  • Collect and share stories of achievement, innovation, and impact from students, employees, and alumni to fulfill the marketing campaign “Ravens Rising.”
  • Produce and distribute campus newsletters to keep internal and external stakeholders connected with the university. Write content for newsletters and institutional website properties to ensure accuracy, tone, and alignment with brand standards.

Editorial Support

  • Edit the content of university materials to ensure accuracy and clarity.
  • Maintain and distribute the university's editorial style guide.
  • Assist in managing and refining the AI-enabled editorial assistant.

Strong Collaborator and Thought Leader

  • Contribute creative ideas to enhance communication strategies, strengthen the university’s reputation, and improve audience engagement.
  • Stay informed about emerging trends in communications, marketing, and hospitality to bring fresh ideas forward.

Event Marketing and Support (est. 20%)

  • Develop and coordinate marketing plans for key university events, conferences, and initiatives to enhance participation and increase awareness.
  • Build out events on Eventbrite, ensuring that event messaging, dates, prices, visuals, and floor plans are correct and align with the institution’s brand.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Professional Writing, Creative Writing, Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, or a related field.
  • 3–5 years of experience in marketing, communications, or writing.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Highly organized, proactive, and adaptable in fast-paced environments. Ability to work some nights and weekends to support internal and external event services.
  • Creative thinker who values collaboration, consistency, and attention to detail.
  • Deep commitment to providing exceptional service and elevating the quality of every audience and guest experience.
  • A vibrant Christian faith consistent with Anderson University’s mission. Candidates should possess a vitality of Christian experience that is maturing in insight and application, commit to the integration of faith and learning, and affirm the University’s statement of faith and lifestyle expectations.

Success Indicators

  • Strong collaboration with team members across marketing, communication, design, social media, and events to ensure AU is consistent, high-quality, and audience-focused.
  • Increased event engagement, positive guest feedback, event revenue, and focus on external events by conferences and events.
  • Consistent, polished communications that reflect institutional excellence and personality.
  • Demonstrated creativity, professionalism, and reliability.
