ROLE DESCRIPTION
Financial Accountant
This position offices in-person, at our Business Services offices.
ROLE SUMMARY
The Financial Accountant at Valor Christian High School is a key member of a highly skilled finance team focused on delivering accurate, timely, and meaningful financial information that supports strategic decision-making and operational excellence across the school. As a service department, Business Services strives to represent a servant's heart while providing the highest level of customer service to our constituents, including students, families, faculty, staff, donors, and community partners.
This position is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the school's financial records through ownership of the monthly and annual close processes, financial reporting, account reconciliations, fund accounting, and compliance activities. The Financial Accountant serves as a trusted resource to Business Services leadership and collaborates with departments across the school to ensure sound financial stewardship, strong internal controls, and compliance with accounting standards and organizational policies.
The ideal candidate possesses strong technical accounting expertise, excellent analytical and communication skills, advanced proficiency with financial systems and reporting tools, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic educational environment. Experience in nonprofit, independent school, or mission-driven organizations is highly desirable.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Responsibilities
  • Prepare monthly and annual financial statements and supporting schedules for management and leadership
  • Manage key aspects of the month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, accruals, account analysis, and financial review procedures
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts, bank accounts, investment accounts, and other balance sheet accounts to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Analyze financial results, investigate variances, identify trends, and provide meaningful insights to finance leadership
  • Maintain and reconcile fixed asset records and calculate monthly depreciation
  • Reconcile donor-restricted funds, endowment activity, and other designated accounts with the general ledger and supporting records
  • Assist with accounting and reporting related to contributions, grants, fundraising initiatives, and other nonprofit revenue streams
  • Prepare ad hoc financial analyses, reports, and forecasts to support strategic and operational decision-making
  • Coordinate audit schedules, prepare supporting documentation, and serve as a primary liaison with external auditors during annual financial statement audits
  • Support the annual operating and capital budgeting processes
  • Monitor compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), organizational policies, and established accounting procedures
  • Maintain documentation and workpapers that support financial reporting accuracy and audit readiness

  • Assist in partnership with departments across the school to provide financial guidance, reporting support, and training as needed
  • Support special projects, strategic initiatives, and cross-functional Business Services priorities
  • Stay current on accounting standards, nonprofit accounting practices, AI advancements, and industry trends impacting independent schools and finance operations
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned in support of the school's mission and operational objectives

RESULTS
An excellent Financial Accountant will have managed the full accounting cycle, including period-end close activities, financial analysis, reconciliations, and reporting, resulting in accurate and reliable financial data for leadership and key stakeholders. Additionally, this role will have collaborated across departments to resolve complex accounting matters, improved processes, and provided insights and information that informed planning and resource allocation. The Financial Accountant will have built trusted relationships throughout the organization having delivered responsive support, driving operational efficiencies, and contributing to sound fiscal management.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND REQUIRED COMPETENCIES
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required

Experience:
  • 5-8 years of progressive accounting experience is preferred
  • Experience in nonprofit, independent school, or educational environments preferred

Required Competencies:

  • Quick learner who is able to manage multiple concurrent responsibilities
  • Flexible and adaptable to changes in a growing culture
  • Able to quickly and proficiently master new software applications and other technology

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The same basic physical demands described here are the same for all employees to successfully perform the essential functions of their jobs. Employees must periodically lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and could occasionally be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral/depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics are varied and include classroom, office, and outdoor events while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is also varied. It should be noted, the office work location is located across the street from Valor Christian High School at Cherry Hills Community Church, where the school leases office space.
POSITION TYPE: C, Year-round schedule. 12-Month Calendar. This position offices in-person, at our Business Services offices.
HOURS PER WEEK: Full-Time, Exempt
SUPERVISOR: Director of Business Services
PAY RANGE: $65,000 - $75,000 Salary
