What is a choreographer instructor?

Choreographer Instructors are professionals who design dance routines and teach them to students or performers. They combine artistic vision with teaching skills to break down complex movements and help individuals or groups master choreography. Choreographer Instructors work in a variety of settings, such as dance studios, schools, theaters, and for events or productions. Their role also includes selecting music, ensuring safe practice, and providing feedback to improve performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a choreographer instructor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Choreographer Instructor, you need a strong background in dance technique, choreography, and instructional experience, often supported by formal dance training or a degree in dance. Familiarity with music editing software, studio equipment, and sometimes teaching certifications is beneficial. Creativity, leadership, and effective communication are essential soft skills for motivating students and collaborating with other artists. These skills enable instructors to design engaging routines, foster talent, and ensure a productive and inspiring learning environment.

How does a choreographer instructor typically collaborate with other creative professionals during a production?

As a Choreographer Instructor, you'll often work closely with directors, costume designers, music directors, and lighting technicians to bring a performance to life. Collaboration is essential, as you'll need to align dance routines with the overall artistic vision, music cues, and stage design. Regular meetings and rehearsals with these professionals ensure that choreography integrates seamlessly into the broader production and that performers are well-prepared. This team-based environment allows for creative input and problem-solving, making adaptability and communication key to success in the role.

DivaDance Instructor

New York City Pearl Studios, Midtown Manhattan    Part-Time

Applicants who do not follow the instructions under HOW TO APPLY VIDEO LINK REQUIRED will not be considered.

ABOUT US

DivaDance is the #1 brand for pop-music inspired, choreography-based dance classes, programs, and parties with franchises across the US and in Mexico. Joining our staff is an opportunity to change lives, empower others, and do what you love as we inspire confidence and build community in our inclusive, all-levels classes. We offer flexible working hours, professional development opportunities, leadership growth paths (including pathways to your own franchise ownership), and the exciting (and fun!) chance to be part of a growing, values-driven franchise organization.

THE GIG

You're the star of every DivaDance class, teaching clients original choreography to songs ranging from Bey to Biebs. Our classes are for all levels and follow a consistent DivaDance format.

Our ideal candidate has a big personality, has taught dance fitness to adult students, creates their own choreography, is super responsive via phone/text, and is genuinely hungry to work. Flakes or last-minute excuse-makers need not apply!

You will be required to complete our online Instructor Development Program before teaching your first class. There is no cost to you for this professional development, and your training time is paid.

HOURS, COMPENSATION, LOCATION

We are looking for you to teach 4-5 classes per month and/or private parties. Evening and weekend availability is required.

We want instructors with open availability who are hungry to work. Beyond your regularly scheduled classes, you may be called on last minute to sub, and weekend private party bookings come up often. The instructors who pick up the phone and say yes are the ones who climb our pay tiers fastest and get first crack at new opportunities.

You'll teach at Pearl Studios in Midtown Manhattan. Instructors are expected to arrive and clock in 20 minutes before the posted class start time to set up and greet clients.

Per class: Compensation is $40 $80 per class. Every instructor starts at $40 per class and moves up automatically as you teach no negotiating, no guessing:

Instructors are also eligible for bonuses and commissions. Paid sick leave is provided in accordance with NYC law.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Experience teaching dance fitness to adults (group fitness, dance cardio, or adult dance classes teaching kids/teens or technique-only classes doesn't meet this bar on its own)
  • Experience creating your own choreography
  • Bonus points for former dance team / drill team / cheerleaders

HOW TO APPLY VIDEO LINK REQUIRED

Your application must include a working link to video of you teaching 2-3 8-counts of your own original choreography. Here's what we're looking for:

  • You, on camera, teaching talking through the counts, cueing the moves. Not a performance reel.
  • Original choreography your own work, not a trending TikTok routine or someone else's combo
  • 2-3 8-counts is plenty. Phone video is fine. Polish is not the point your teaching is.
  • Link must be publicly viewable (unlisted YouTube, Google Drive with sharing on, Instagram Reel, or Dropbox). Password-protected or private links will be counted as no link.

Applications without a working original choreography link will not be considered.

DivaDance is an equal opportunity employer. We're committed to an inclusive hiring process if you need a reasonable accommodation to apply or interview, just let us know.
