What is a Chipper job?

A Chipper is a labor-intensive role in industries like construction, metalworking, and shipbuilding. The primary responsibility involves using tools such as hammers and chisels to remove excess material, imperfections, or debris from metal surfaces. Chippers help ensure smooth finishes and prepare materials for welding, painting, or further processing. The job requires physical strength, attention to detail, and adherence to safety guidelines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Chipper position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Chipper, you need physical stamina, attention to detail, and familiarity with hand and power tools, often supported by experience or training in industrial or construction environments. Knowledge of safety protocols and the ability to operate chipping machines and grinders are important, with OSHA safety certification sometimes preferred. Dependability, teamwork, and strong communication make a candidate stand out when working in fast-paced or hazardous settings. These competencies ensure safe, efficient removal of excess material from metal parts or structures, which is critical for meeting production standards and workplace safety.

What does a typical workday look like for a Chipper in an industrial setting?

A typical day for a Chipper involves preparing and inspecting metal parts, using pneumatic or electric chipping tools to remove excess material, and closely following safety procedures to maintain a hazard-free environment. Chippers often collaborate with welders, fabricators, and quality control teams to ensure finished parts meet required specifications. Depending on the workplace, you may work indoors in a fabrication shop or at outdoor construction sites, frequently wearing personal protective equipment. The work can be physically demanding, but it offers a steady routine and opportunities to develop specialized skills over time.

Looking for an opportunity where success comes naturally? Then you may have found your crew. We're looking for a Groundsperson to join our team.
Here's what you'd do:
You love to spend your day outdoors cultivating amazing landscapes. You treat grass, trees and plots with great care and attention, doing whatever it takes to help them thrive. Here at BrightView, we appreciate people with such love for landscaping and greenery.
You'd be responsible for:

  • Set up and clean up, and taking good care of our trucks and machinery.
  • Working as part of a team.
  • Setting up safety items including positioning cones and signs and roping or taping off crew work areas
  • Handing tools to the climber and receiving tools from the climber using a rope to hoist them up into the tree
  • Gathering branches into piles, transporting to the chipper, feeding them into the chipper and unloading tree trunks and chips at the appropriate facility
  • Ensuring that all operations, job sites and employees are safe and that the general public which might come into contact with the area will be safe
  • Communicating effectively with other crew members and the public

You might be a good fit if you have:
  • You must be at least 18 years old, enthusiastic and dependable, and able to safely work with equipment like power saws and cutters.

And while not mandatory, it would be great if you also have:
  • Applicants must be able to work outdoors, in all weather conditions, doing very physical work, able to lift/carry 35-80 pounds often
  • Previous experience is helpful, but you must have an understanding of landscape basics.
  • CDL Driver's License would be a plus

With our range of services, including landscape design, development, maintenance and enhancements, there's no limit to what we can do, and what you can achieve.
In addition to industry-leading development opportunities, you'll also have benefits and perks like:
