Job description

About the Position The City of Kentwood, MI is seeking a Fire Chief to lead a high-performing department known for its strong culture, operational excellence, and commitment to professional development. Serving one of West Michigan's premier and growing communities, the Fire Chief will have the opportunity to build upon an already successful foundation while helping define the Department's next chapter. The next Chief will inherit a respected organization of approximately 55 employees operating from three staffed fire stations, with a reputation for professionalism, service, and operational readiness.

As a key member of the City's executive leadership team, the Chief will work closely with the Mayor, City Commission, department directors, employees, and regional partners to advance strategic priorities while ensuring exceptional public safety services for the community. The ideal candidate is an accomplished fire service leader who is equally comfortable leading during major incidents, developing future leaders, navigating labor relations, managing budgets, and representing the Department throughout the community. Kentwood values a leader who is visible, engaged, collaborative, and decisive; someone who understands that credibility is earned through competence, accountability, and strong relationships.

This is an exceptional opportunity for a forward-thinking leader who is passionate about developing others, strengthening organizational culture, and making a lasting impact on both the Department and the community it serves. Candidate Privacy & Michigan FOIA Candidates should be aware that the City is subject to Michigan's Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), which provides public access to public records, subject to applicable exemptions. As a result, information submitted as part of the recruitment and selection process may be subject to a FOIA request and disclosure to the extent required by law.

Supplemental Information Please submit your resume and a letter of interest outlining your relevant experience and why this opportunity resonates with you. This recruitment will remain open until filled, with a first review of applications on Friday, September 25, 2026. Candidates are encouraged to apply early for full consideration.
