Job description

Intellectual Property Counsel – Associate Director

Pratt & Whitney is seeking an Intellectual Property Counsel to join a tight‑knit team that works alongside world‑class engineers, scientists, and program leaders to protect and use our leading‑edge technology. The role is a hybrid opportunity at the East Hartford, Connecticut location and reports directly to the Vice President, Chief Intellectual Property Counsel.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with clients in developing and executing intellectual property strategies for key technologies and programs.
  • Negotiate and advise regarding an array of transactions with customers, suppliers, partners and license counterparties, and support mergers and acquisitions.
  • Oversee and manage patent preparation and prosecution.
  • Monitor, assess and mitigate risk regarding third‑party patents and applications.
  • Counsel, resolve disputes and represent the company in disputes involving intellectual property in administrative and other settings.
  • Drive IP engagement within the business and build confidence among cross‑disciplinary team members.
Qualifications – Must Have
  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited institution and undergraduate degree in engineering or technical field.
  • 10+ years of professional experience, including 5+ years as a practicing attorney.
  • Currently admitted and in good standing with at least one state bar.
  • Currently admitted or eligible for U.S. Patent bar.
  • Eligible for U.S. Security Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in mechanical, aerospace, materials or comparable engineering or technical discipline.
  • Engineering experience within the same fields.
  • IP litigation and transactional experience.
  • U.S. Government contracts IP experience.
  • Effective written and verbal communication on complex issues.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Creative problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent judgment and professional maturity.
  • Ability to adapt to dynamic, complex and fast‑paced environments.
