Job description

NEJM Clinicianย seeks an Editor-in-Chief who brings national recognition, clinical credibility, and a trusted public voice to a new, fast-growing publication for clinicians.

The EIC/Deputy Editor will serve as the intellectual and public face of NEJM Clinician,ย guiding its editorialย board, upholding NEJM standards of quality and relevance, and ensuring that Clinician content and formats reflect the real-world needs of practicing clinicians. The EIC must ensure that Clinician covers the best clinical research through a "generalist" lens. That said, Clinician is aimed at all clinicians: it is "generalist-first" but not "generalist-only."

Working closely withย the Clinicianย Lead and Deputy Editors and NEJM staff, the EIC/Deputy Editor, NEJM Group will provide consistent oversight of content selection, editorial board development, and evolution of Clinician's formats and offerings, while partnering with internal leaders on broader strategy, operations, and growth. The EIC is expected to participate in regular check-ins and annual board meetings. Expected commitment of approximately 20 hours per week.ย 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1)ย ย ย  Guide and integrate the overall scope of NEJM Clinician, ensuring regular production of surveillance content consistent with the quality and standards of the NEJM Group.

2)ย ย ย  Establish best practices in medical surveillance services for clinicians, including scope of coverage of general medicine and medical specialties as well as approaches to curation.

3)ย ย ย  Partner with Editor-in-Chief, NEJM & NEJM Group to optimize the editorial structure of NEJM Clinician; determine overall board and editorial structure, and recruit editors and board members, balancing representation and oversight of general medicine and internal medicine subspecialties.

4)ย ย ย  Partner with General Manager, NEJM Group and Editor-in-Chief, NEJM & NEJM Group to determine and approve editorial policies for NEJM Clinician.ย  Assess the performance of editorial boards and individual contributors to NEJM Clinician.

5)ย ย ย  Collaborate with NEJM Group staff in evaluating proposed product enhancements, features, or offerings, as well as changes to editorial or production practices for NEJM Clinician, and advise on how current practice or proposed changes meets the informational needs and other expectations of the NEJM Clinician audience.

6)ย ย ย  Collaborate with NEJM Group staff in evaluating the content and scope of new products (e.g. NEJM Clinician) intended to be product evolutions for NEJM Clinician, and in planning and executing a successful transition to new products.

7)ย ย ย  Responsible for providing editorial oversight of NEJM Group Shared Editorial Services products such as NEJM Group print supplements, NEJM Group conference coverage, or NEJM Group Conference recap events.

8)ย ย ย  Review and approve editors and contributors proposed by the Shared Editorial Services staff for relevant products, ensuring that all involved match the expertise required for those products, and will assesses and resolves potential conflicts of interest.

9)ย ย ย  Partner with Editor-in-Chief, NEJM & NEJM Group to convene and approve an NEJM Group Clinical Advisory Board to provide regular contributions or oversight for Shared Editorial Services products.

QUALIFICATIONS:

ย ย ย ย ย ย  MD or equivalent medical degree with active or recent clinical practice.

ย ย ย ย ย ย  Deep expertise in general internal medicine or a closely related field, with strong credibility among practicing clinicians.

ย ย ย ย ย ย  Demonstrated credibility with practicing clinicians (e.g., academic leadership, widely read publications, invited lectures, or national service).

ย ย ย ย ย ย  Experience interpreting and communicating clinical evidence for physician audiences.

ย ย ย ย ย ย  Proven ability to exercise editorial judgment and upholdย high standardsย of clinical relevance and accuracy.

ย ย ย ย ย ย  Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a matrixed editorial organization.

ย ย ย ย ย ย  Literacy in, and experience with, artificial intelligence (AI), including openness to experiment with integrating AI into editorial workflows.

ย ย ย ย ย ย  Comfort with editorial experimentation across formats, including digital, video, audio, and other clinician-facing products.

ย ย ย ย ย ย  Abilityย to commit to a 3-year term with approximately 20 hours per week of engagement.

ย ย ย ย ย ย  Established public voice in medicine, including contributions to national media (e.g., television, major newspapers, podcasts, or widely followed digital platforms).
