Job description

Summary
This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Southeast Area (SEA), at the US National Poultry Research Center in Athens, GA.
In this position, you will provide leadership and solutions for prevention and control of endemic poultry viruses using basic and applied approaches to benefit the poultry industry and consumers.

  • Enhance chicken genomic resources (e.g., immune cell atlas).
  • Identify causative polymorphisms, genes, and/or pathways conferring genetic resistance to endemic poultry viral diseases.
  • Assist in efforts to determine the influence of vaccines and/or host genetics on transmission and evolution of Marek's disease virus (MDV) to higher virulence.
  • Work with large datasets and the ability to integrate these fields to address the complex nature of multigenic traits and host-pathogen interactions.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
Basic Requirements for Genetics Series, 0440:
Degree: genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics.
Additional Requirements
In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.
GS-12
Specialized Experience: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-12 level of this position are: conducting experimental research in the area of animal genetics; utilizing computational software for data analysis; and publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals related to animals.
OR
Education: Possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in genetics, or a curriculum or pattern of training that placed major emphasis on genetics. Graduate study in related fields such as agronomy, horticulture, animal, dairy, or poultry husbandry, entomology, microbiology, plant pathology, chemistry, molecular and cellular biology, and physiology that involved cross-training in genetics is qualifying, provided it placed sufficient emphasis on genetics. Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped applicants with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Combination: Successful combination of specialized experience and graduate level education.
GS-13
Specialized Experience: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-13 level of this position are: conducting experiments on the immune response in chicken; developing research on the genetic resistance to poultry breeding; collaborating with internal or external stakeholders; and publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals related to poultry.
GS-14
Specialized Experience:
Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-14 level of this position are: planning and conducting research to determine the influence of vaccinations in chicken and breeding; identifying the causation of deformations, genetic resistance, or tumors in chicken; collaborating with internal or external stakeholders; and publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals related to chicken genomics.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Supervisory/Managerial Competencies - the following KSAs will also be used to evaluate candidates in the interview and selection process:
  1. Ability to lead and accomplish work through others (i.e. team building, conflict management, cultural awareness, strategic thinking, technology management, and political savvy).
  2. Ability to communicate with individuals or groups from diverse backgrounds in a variety of situations.
