Job description

General Definition of Work The Fitness Specialist position will serve as a fitness instructor for adult exercise classes at the Blacksburg Community Center, by educating and motivating class participants and clients and promoting healthy living and well-being. Responsibilities include developing positive relationships with class participants by teaching a variety of challenging and entertaining group fitness classes, as well as educating participants on correct form and alternate moves during fitness routines. Applicants for this position will also be considered for the position of a certified personal trainer.

Responsibilities include developing personal exercise training programs based on the client's unique goals, medical history, and movement history. Additional responsibilities include ensuring the safety of clients with regard to heart rate and exercise techniques, as well as modification of specific exercises to accommodate various skill levels. This position seeks an applicant knowledgeable in Yoga and Tai Chi with availability to conduct classes Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm, and Saturdays, from 10:30 am - 11:30 am.

Develop, implement and instruct a variety of fitness classes at the Blacksburg Community Center Teach participants in a variety of age ranges and skill levels In personal training setting: develop and implement appropriate and safe exercise routines for individual clients Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in large groups fitness instruction and individualized personal training sessions Thorough knowledge of necessary safety precautions Knowledge and understanding regarding use of exercise equipment and tools Ability to interact with and instruct a wide variety of age groups and skill levels Ability to keep consistent notes and documentation of information regarding individual personal training sessions and group exercise routines Ability to lift heavy objects Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, clients, participants and the general public Excellent customer relations skills are required Education and Experience A high school diploma or G.E.D. certification is required Previous work experience is preferred, but not required Special Requirements Certification from an accredited fitness organization and previous experience are also required Physical Requirements This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force Work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, pushing or pulling and lifting Working environment could include warm or humid environments could occasionally be loud Vocal communication is required for instruction, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications
