Locations

For the 2026-2027 season, Petroleum Engineer Intern positions are available in Houston, Texas; Midland, Texas; Covington, Louisiana; and Bakersfield, California.

Job Overview

Petroleum Engineer Interns work as part of multi‑disciplinary teams that may include petroleum engineers, geologists, geophysicists, facility engineers, drilling and completion engineers, data scientists, and software developers. Interns are assigned to production and reservoir engineering positions and projects that contribute value to Chevron. Projects are matched to interns based on degree pursued and prior internship experience. Interns receive a mentor to provide guidance on their projects, and positions can be either field or office based.

Responsibilities
  • Develop technical skills in production and reservoir engineering assignments focused on asset development planning, production operations, reserves, uncertainty and risk management, and capital project development.
  • Execute tasks under the guidance of a mentor and on assigned projects.
  • Participate in projects that assist in the development of Chevron’s energy portfolio.
Qualifications
  • Students pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. degree in Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Strong academic performance in core programs, with demonstrated communication, leadership, teamwork, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to drive on a routine basis.
  • Demonstrated commitment to The Chevron Way.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in research, technology development, or consulting.
  • Previous experience in an integrated oil or international service company intern program.
  • Participation in an industry or energy company university research project.

New graduates who join Chevron full‑time enter the Horizons Program, a structured early‑career experience that includes formal training, on‑the‑job learning, mentorship, multiple job assignments, and possible location rotations.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Hourly rate ranging from $35.20 to $10,200 monthly, adjusted for role, degree level, and academic year.
  • Furnished housing.
  • Participation in the Employee Savings Investment Plan with immediate vesting in both employee and company contributions.
  • Chevron matching contributions: 4% company match for a 1% employee contribution; 8% company match for a 2% employee contribution.
  • Flexible work schedules (5/40, 9/80, or 4/10) as determined by the work group and confirmed with the hiring manager.
  • Paid holidays based on the work schedule.
  • Full year of service credit for each internship completion, contingent on re‑employment within 365 days.
  • When converted to a full‑time new‑graduate position, Chevron offers competitive pay and benefits, including healthcare, time off, retirement plans, and development opportunities.
Relocation & International Considerations

Relocation may be considered. Visa sponsorship is only offered for Ph.D. candidates or those currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program. These positions may involve technologies subject to U.S. export controls and trade sanctions. Applicants who are citizens or permanent residents of countries subject to U.S. export control law may be ineligible for access to certain technologies.
