College/Department Information
Established in the summer of 2002, the Center for Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine (CBGM) at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) at Augusta University (AU) was developed to promote interdisciplinary and translational research in Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine with the ultimate goal of promoting predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory (4P) medicine. The Center's research efforts focus on two main areas: Discovery and validation of biomarkers for disease prediction and diagnosis; Pharmacomics and drug discovery for personalized medicine. CBGM is home of four internationally renowned programs in diabetes research: The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young, the Prospective Assessment in Newborns of Diabetes Autoimmunity, the Diabetic Complications Consortium, and the Mouse Metabolic Phenotype Consortium. Additional research programs include autoimmune diseases, transplantation, and cancer. These research programs are supported by an annual extramural funding of approximately $12 million. The center houses several state-of-the-art high throughput and high content facilities for genetics, genomics, proteomics, drug screening and bioinformatics.
Job Summary
Performs basic molecular and/or cellular biology techniques. Duties also include: support ongoing research projects, help develop and evaluate new research techniques and procedures, maintain a detailed and organized notebook with procedures and data, help maintain mouse lines, and make orders for the lab.
Responsibilities
The duties include but are not limited to:
EXPERIMENTS : Perform a variety of examinations of specimens for the presence of diseases and pathological conditions. Prepare culture media. Incubate and culture bacteria. Stain slides and perform molecular biology techniques.
EQUIPMENT : Calibrate and operate laboratory equipment such as spectrophotometer, microscope, coulter counter, centrifuge, hematic stainer, etc. Make orders for lab.
MOUSE COLONY : Maintain mouse lines and colonies.
OTHER : Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology, social sciences, natural sciences, life, health care, or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and experience in a research or clinical setting.
OR
Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology, social sciences, natural sciences, life, health care, or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of three years' experience in a research or clinical area.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
KNOWLEDGE
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
Detail-oriented with strong prioritization and organizational skills.
ABILITIES
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; M-F (Work outside of the standard business hours may be required)
Pay Band: B5
Salary: $17.88/hourly - $21.63/hourly
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
