Job description

Job Title: Chemistry Lab Support Assistant

Job Classification: Lab and Research Support, Student

Department: Chemistry and Biochemistry

Hiring Manager: Carmen Young

Work Schedule: 10 hours per week between 8am - 6pm 

Desired Length of Employment: Fall / Spring

Job Description:

Role Description: The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, College of Arts & Sciences is seeking two dynamic students interested in assisting the chemistry laboratory coordinator. Ideal candidates should be familiar with chemistry laboratory safety guidelines and protocols, have a strong work ethic, and ability to follow instructions to prepare supplies for chemistry labs and associated learning activities.
Primary Function: Assist the chemistry laboratory coordinator with lab prep to support student learning experiences. Collaboration and communication
skills are essential to establish and plan laboratory preparation and follow up after lab activities are completed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Comply with safety rules and regulations in a chemistry laboratory.
Set up laboratory equipment and supplies for lab experiments.
Clean laboratory equipment and put away supplies after experiments.
Clean up lab space for instrument set up or room rearrangement.
Sort and organize new chemicals according to the chemical inventory.
Inventory and identify supplies needed for upcoming lab experiments.
* Additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Successful completion of General Chemistry Lab I (CHE 1101) or equivalent.
Successful completion of General Chemistry Lab II (CHE 1102) or equivalent. 
Additional Preferred Attributes:
Completion of laboratory instructions beyond General Chemistry.
Experience working as a lab technician or in a research lab.

  • May perform laboratory research

  • Adhere to and ensure safety procedures and precautions are followed
  • May research equipment maintenance and assist with maintaining lab equipment
  • May assist with documentation associated with research projects
  • May assist with or participate in carrying out experiments
  • May assist with managing laboratory inventory or supplies

  • May assist with analyzing data, testing, and interpreting results
  • Perform all other duties as assigned to support Baylor's mission  
  • Ability to comply with University policies
