Overview

The Laboratory Support Technician (LST) processes laboratory specimens for testing, evaluates specimen acceptability, enters patient and test information into the computer, and responds to requests for information from customers. This position serves in the Laboratory's main communication and customer relations center. The employee monitors test requests in the order/entry system. This position contributes directly to patient care by accurately and timely processing specimens and dispersing information both in and outside the Laboratory.

Responsibilities

Registers, orders and accessions specimens utilizing the laboratory and hospital information systems by entering and/or verifying patient information. Matches requested tests to Laboratory-offered tests. Follows all UnityPoint Health – Des Moines policies regarding Medicare and Coding compliance. Prioritizes specimens and relays special requests, and all additional information.

Qualifications

EDUCATION: High school graduate or equivalent. Training as a unit clerk, medical assistant, medical secretary, or phlebotomist is preferred. Coursework in biology and/or chemistry is considered. Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English. EXPERIENCE: No experience is required. Previous employment in a medical setting, in computer operations, and/or with telephone demands is preferred. LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS: None
