As of Jun 5, 2026, the average yearly pay for cheminformatics bioinformatics in the United States is $94,474.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $67,500.00 and $129,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How do professionals in cheminformatics bioinformatics typically collaborate with interdisciplinary teams on research projects?

Cheminformatics bioinformatics professionals frequently work alongside chemists, biologists, data scientists, and software engineers to analyze and interpret complex biological and chemical data. Collaboration often involves regular team meetings to discuss project goals, share data insights, and troubleshoot computational models. These professionals contribute by developing algorithms, managing large datasets, and integrating diverse data sources to support drug discovery or biological research. Effective communication and adaptability are key, as projects often evolve based on new scientific findings or technological advancements.

What are Cheminformatics and Bioinformatics?

Cheminformatics and bioinformatics are interdisciplinary fields that use computational techniques to analyze and interpret chemical and biological data, respectively. Cheminformatics focuses on the storage, retrieval, and analysis of chemical information, such as molecular structures and properties, to aid drug discovery and materials science. Bioinformatics, on the other hand, deals primarily with biological data like DNA, RNA, and protein sequences to understand biological processes. Both fields often overlap, especially in areas like drug design, genomics, and systems biology, where analyzing complex datasets is crucial for scientific advancement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cheminformatics/Bioinformatics professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cheminformatics/Bioinformatics professional, you need a strong background in chemistry, biology, computer science, and data analysis, often supported by a degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field. Proficiency with programming languages (such as Python, R, or Java), molecular modeling tools, and bioinformatics databases is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication enable you to interpret complex data and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for transforming large biological datasets into actionable insights that drive research and innovation in life sciences.

Job Description Summary

The Biologics Research Center (BRC) is looking for a bioinformatician, a data scientist, or a computational biologist to join the Bioinformatics and Biotherapeutics modeling team in Cambridge, US.
The team collaborates closely with experimental scientists to analyze different types of screening, omics data sets, define and develop data analysis pipelines and tools to support our xRNA programs, and to improve technology platforms in the xRNA space.

Job Description

Internal job title: Senior Expert I/II, Data Science

Location: Cambridge, MA, onsite #LI-onsite

One of the key responsibilities of the successful candidate is to provide computational, bioinformatic, and statistical support for research and early discovery of RNA therapeutics and RNA platform innovation. You work in a collaborative and multi-disciplinary environment by translating projects' needs into bioinformatics solutions; you identify computational needs and influence the introduction and the design of new/state-of-the-art analysis techniques and tools to leverage the use of bioinformatics in the RNA focus area.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide bioinformatics support to xRNA pipeline and technology projects by consistently collecting, analyzing, integrating in-silico parameters, screening and omics data to draw relevant and innovative conclusions

  • Independently design, plan, execute, and document complex data analysis, then interpret, summarize and report findings to help drive decisions and set priorities

  • Follow latest advances in the field, raise awareness, and influence the introduction of novel and state-of-the-art computational techniques

  • Collaborate in a matrix environment, working with scientists and teams in different areas to address projects' specific needs and quickly adapt to new technologies and changing needs

  • Develop user-friendly applications to make RNA data accessible to bench scientists for broader and repeated use

  • Communicate data and analyses to broad scientific audience, technical and non-technical team members and colleagues

  • Independently identify and lead, or support, the development of innovative bioinformatics solutions in a matrix environment to answer scientific questions with an impact on the development of the next-generation xRNA therapeutics biology and platform.

Essential Requirements:

  • PhD degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Cheminformatics, or a closely related discipline, along with a minimum of two years of post-graduate experience, or an MS degree with a minimum of 6 years of relevant work experience, preferably in industry.
