Job description

Job Title: Chemical OperatorJob Description

This role involves operating equipment in a liquid chemical plant to safely transfer, blend, and handle a variety of liquid chemicals. You will work with pumps, hoses, tanks, and containers to move products, verify materials, and support production in a heavy industrial environment that includes hazardous materials and peroxide transloading operations.

Responsibilities
  • Operate pumps and related equipment to transfer liquid chemicals between tanks, totes, drums, railcars, and other containers.
  • Connect and disconnect hoses to tanks and other vessels to safely transfer liquid chemicals to totes and drums.
  • Manually handle and move totes of chemicals weighing approximately 35 pounds, and use a sit-down forklift to move heavier containers as needed.
  • Verify incoming and outgoing products on trucks by reviewing and matching written documentation to ensure accurate materials handling.
  • Label drums, totes, and other containers accurately to reflect contents and comply with internal and regulatory requirements.
  • Work in the peroxide transloading department and hazardous material transloading department to safely transfer chemicals according to procedures.
  • Operate a spotter truck to move containers and trailers around the property, when required and trained.
  • Perform consistent heavy lifting and material handling throughout the shift in a heavy-duty industrial environment.
  • Clean and maintain the work area, equipment, and tools to support a safe, organized, and efficient facility.
  • Follow all safety procedures and protocols for working near hazardous chemicals, including proper use of equipment and adherence to plant guidelines.
  • Support production and batch-making activities by operating valves, pumps, and related machinery as directed.
  • Work overtime as needed to meet operational demands and support plant production schedules.
Essential Skills
  • Experience working in an industrial or manufacturing environment operating production machinery such as valves and pumps.
  • Previous experience with heavy lifting and loading and unloading materials in a production or warehouse setting.
  • Chemical operator, compounder, mixer, or similar experience in chemical handling and processing.
  • Hands-on experience with tank loading, fluid transfer, hoses, railcar loading or unloading, and tank loading operations.
  • Ability to operate a sit-down forklift safely and efficiently.
  • Comfort working in a very heavy-duty industrial environment with hazardous chemicals.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written documents for product verification and labeling.
  • Willingness and ability to work overtime as needed.
  • Capability to perform consistent heavy lifting and physical tasks throughout the workday.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in chemical storage, handling, or distribution logistics environments.
  • Background in batch making, blending, or compounding chemicals.
  • Familiarity with operating a spotter truck or moving containers and trailers on-site.
  • Experience working with pumps, valves, and other fluid transfer equipment in an industrial setting.

Work Environment

The facility operates as a full-service chemical storage, handling, and distribution logistics operation in a very heavy-duty industrial setting. Employees work around hazardous chemicals and must feel comfortable in an environment that includes peroxide and other hazardous material transloading activities. The workforce is approximately 100 employees in a non-union setting. Standard schedules are on first shift, either 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with overtime as needed. Work takes place both indoors and outdoors, with roughly half of the day potentially spent outside. The role involves regular use of pumps, hoses, valves, sit-down forklifts, and other material handling equipment, as well as frequent heavy lifting and manual handling of chemical containers.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Joliet, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
