How much do chemical synthesis jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 18, 2026, the average hourly pay for chemical synthesis in the United States is $22.97, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.23 and $25.72 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a chemical synthesis chemist?

To thrive as a Chemical Synthesis Chemist, you need a strong background in organic or inorganic chemistry, laboratory techniques, and typically a bachelor’s or advanced degree in chemistry or a related field. Familiarity with analytical instruments like NMR, HPLC, GC-MS, and knowledge of laboratory safety protocols are essential, and certifications such as GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) may be beneficial. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help chemists excel when troubleshooting complex reactions and collaborating with colleagues. These skills are vital for ensuring safe, efficient, and innovative synthesis processes that meet research or industrial objectives.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in chemical synthesis roles, and how can they be managed?

Professionals in chemical synthesis often encounter challenges such as reproducibility of reactions, managing hazardous materials, and troubleshooting unexpected results. Addressing these requires strong attention to detail, rigorous documentation, and adherence to safety protocols. Collaborating closely with analytical teams and leveraging the collective expertise of colleagues can help overcome technical hurdles. Staying current with literature and new methodologies also enables chemists to devise innovative solutions and adapt to evolving project needs.

What is the difference between Chemical Synthesis vs Chemical Technician?
