How much do chemical synthesis jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 7, 2026, the average hourly pay for chemical synthesis in the United States is $22.97, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.23 and $25.72 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Is chemical synthesis hard?

Chemical synthesis as a profession involves understanding complex chemical reactions, precise laboratory techniques, and safety protocols. It requires strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and often a background in chemistry or related fields. The difficulty can vary depending on the complexity of the compounds being synthesized and the level of expertise required.

What is the difference between Chemical Synthesis vs Chemical Technician?

AspectChemical SynthesisChemical Technician
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in chemistry or related field; lab experienceAssociate's degree or diploma in chemistry or related field; technical training
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, manufacturing facilities, R&D settingsLaboratories, production plants, quality control labs
Job FocusDesigning, developing, and executing chemical reactions and processesAssisting with experiments, maintaining equipment, data collection
Industry UsageResearch institutions, pharmaceutical, chemical manufacturingManufacturing plants, quality assurance, process support

While both roles work within the chemistry industry, Chemical Synthesis professionals focus on creating and optimizing chemical reactions, often requiring advanced degrees and research experience. Chemical Technicians support these processes through technical tasks, equipment maintenance, and data collection, typically with technical diplomas. Understanding these differences helps job seekers identify the right career path based on their skills and education.

What is the highest paid chemistry job?

The highest paid chemistry jobs are typically in pharmaceutical executive roles, senior research directors, or chemical engineering management, with salaries often exceeding $150,000 annually. Positions requiring advanced degrees, specialized skills, and leadership responsibilities tend to offer the highest compensation in the field of chemistry.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in chemical synthesis roles, and how can they be managed?

Professionals in chemical synthesis often encounter challenges such as reproducibility of reactions, managing hazardous materials, and troubleshooting unexpected results. Addressing these requires strong attention to detail, rigorous documentation, and adherence to safety protocols. Collaborating closely with analytical teams and leveraging the collective expertise of colleagues can help overcome technical hurdles. Staying current with literature and new methodologies also enables chemists to devise innovative solutions and adapt to evolving project needs.

What are the top 5 chemistry careers?

Top chemistry careers include chemical engineer, analytical chemist, research scientist, quality control analyst, and process development scientist. These roles often require strong laboratory skills, knowledge of chemical processes, and relevant degrees in chemistry or related fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Chemical Synthesis Chemist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Chemical Synthesis Chemist, you need a strong background in organic or inorganic chemistry, laboratory techniques, and typically a bachelor’s or advanced degree in chemistry or a related field. Familiarity with analytical instruments like NMR, HPLC, GC-MS, and knowledge of laboratory safety protocols are essential, and certifications such as GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) may be beneficial. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help chemists excel when troubleshooting complex reactions and collaborating with colleagues. These skills are vital for ensuring safe, efficient, and innovative synthesis processes that meet research or industrial objectives.

What is chemical synthesis?

Chemical synthesis is the process used by chemical synthesis professionals to create complex chemical compounds from simpler substances through controlled chemical reactions. It involves designing reaction pathways, selecting appropriate reagents, and often requires knowledge of laboratory techniques and safety protocols.

Job description

Summary

Postdoctoral Associate is looking for an entry level postdoctoral researcher with experience in chemical synthesis, specifically peptides and/or peptide natural products. Postdoctoral Associate will be expected to independently lead several projects in the lab, ranging from the the synthesis and testing of genetically predicted peptide natural products to the determination of structure-activity relationships. Beyond classical solid phase peptide synthesis, projects also entail the repetition of established <5-step synthetic routes to key precursors. Experience with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and familiarity with Liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (LCMS) is essential. Postdoctoral Associate will assist to complete several established projects and secure high-impact publications in the coming years.

Baylor College of Medicine typically follows similar to the NIH stipulated stipend guidelines for Postdoctoral Associates.

Job Duties

  • Performs scientific tasks related to the synthesis, purification, and testing of peptide natural products.
  • Interprets experimental results and records for publication or patent applications.
  • Serves as senior team members.
  • Provides mentorship and informal education to junior researchers.
  • Leads several projects in the lab, ranging from the the synthesis and testing of genetically predicted peptide natural products to the determination of structure-activity relationships.
  • Works on conventional chemical synthesis, along with recording, interpreting, and reporting results are all expected tasks.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • MD or Ph.D. in Basic Science, Health Science, or a related field.
  • No experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in Chemistry or related field (e.g.: Chemical Biology, Organic Chemistry).
  • Experience in solid phase peptide synthesis and particularly in the synthesis of peptide natural products is valued.
