The Physical Sciences Department at RTRC is seeking a Research Engineer in the Chemical Sciences Discipline, focusing on materials development and electrochemical systems research. The Research Engineer will be part of a team responsible for synthesis, manufacturing, and performance evaluation of advanced materials (coatings, catalysts) for use in RTX applications. Other research focal areas in the discipline include electrochemical systems and chemical sensing and work could include building, testing, and analyzing sub-scale and full-format electrochemical (e.g. battery and fuel cell) and sensing systems (e.g. foreign-object damage).

What You Will Do

The candidate will be an integral member of an interdisciplinary team that is focused on innovative chemical engineering and chemistry research projects at RTRC. In addition to working with various business units of RTX, the team collaborates with leading materials, electrochemical, and sensing experts in universities, national laboratories, and start-up companies.

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Typically, a Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or related technical field.

  • Previous experience operating safely and independently in a research laboratory environment

  • Ability to execute on multiple projects on a given day and prioritize tasks to meet project deadlines

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively with leaders, team members, and researchers from other disciplines

  • Familiarity with advanced data analysis or collection software tools (e.g. Python, Matlab, R, LabView)

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Prior experience with thin film coating methods including Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) and Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD).

  • Prior experience working with one or more of the following: test rig setup and operation, materials synthesis, materials performance characterization, and experimental planning

  • Track record of technical publications or presentations (thesis, journal articles, conference presentation, poster presentation)

  • Fluency with advanced data analysis or collection software tools (Python, Matlab, R, LabView), or specialized engineering software (Aspen, Comsol)

The salary range for this role is 57,200 USD - 108,800 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills. Hired applicants may be eligible for benefits, including but not limited to, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts, flexible work schedules, employee assistance program, Employee Scholar Program, parental leave, paid time off, and holidays. Specific benefits are dependent upon the specific business unit as well as whether or not the position is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement. Hired applicants may be eligible for annual short-term and/or long-term incentive compensation programs depending on the level of the position and whether or not it is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement. Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.
