How much do chemical process control engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 11, 2026, the average yearly pay for chemical process control engineering in the United States is $101,323.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $82,500.00 and $114,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is chemical process control engineering?

Chemical Process Control Engineering is a specialized field that focuses on designing, implementing, and maintaining control systems for chemical manufacturing processes. These engineers work to ensure that chemical processes operate efficiently, safely, and within set parameters by using instrumentation, automation, and computer-based control systems. Their work helps optimize production, reduce waste, and maintain product quality, while also ensuring compliance with environmental and safety regulations. Chemical process control engineers may work in industries such as pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, food processing, and more.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a chemical process control engineer?

To thrive as a Chemical Process Control Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical engineering principles, process control theory, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with process simulation software (like Aspen Plus), distributed control systems (DCS), and PLC programming, as well as certifications such as ISA Certified Automation Professional, are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork and communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are vital to ensure safe, efficient, and optimized operation of complex chemical processes.

What are the most common challenges faced by chemical process control engineers in maintaining optimal process performance?

Chemical Process Control Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing process variability, integrating new technologies into existing systems, and ensuring regulatory compliance while optimizing performance. Balancing safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness requires constant monitoring and fine-tuning of control systems. Collaborating closely with production teams and maintenance staff is essential to quickly address issues and implement improvements, making strong communication and problem-solving skills highly valuable in this role.

What is the difference between Chemical Process Control Engineering vs Chemical Process Engineering?

AspectChemical Process Control EngineeringChemical Process Engineering
Primary FocusDesign and optimization of control systems for chemical processesDesign, operation, and optimization of chemical production processes
Required CredentialsBachelor's or master's in chemical engineering; knowledge of control systemsBachelor's or master's in chemical engineering; process design experience
Work EnvironmentControl rooms, laboratories, plant floorsProcess plants, design offices, manufacturing facilities
Industry UsageProcess industries like petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, refiningChemical manufacturing, process design, plant operation

While Chemical Process Control Engineering focuses on developing and maintaining control systems to ensure safe and efficient chemical processes, Chemical Process Engineering involves designing and optimizing entire chemical production processes. Both roles require a strong chemical engineering background, but their daily tasks and focus areas differ significantly.

Job description

Description

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Chemical Process Engineer to join our team as the Quality Control Manager for our lamination production facility. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing the quality control processes while managing chemical and material processes related to the lamination production. You will work closely with production teams to ensure high-quality standards are met, identifying areas for improvement, troubleshooting quality issues, and implementing corrective actions. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in chemical engineering and process optimization in a manufacturing environment.

DUTIES:

1. Quality Control Oversight: Manage the quality control systems to ensure that all products meet or exceed customer specifications and regulatory standards. Lead the implementation and maintenance of quality assurance programs, including process monitoring and testing procedures.

2. Chemical Process Optimization: Collaborate with production teams to analyze and optimize chemical processes used in lamination, ensuring maximum efficiency, consistency, and quality. Troubleshoot and resolve any issues related to chemical processes that may affect product quality.

3. Vendor Interaction: Work with new and/or existing vendors to improve material characteristics, production performance and reduce process and raw material scrap. Perform vendor audits to drive vendor raw material performance and production process improvements.

4. Testing and Analysis: Design and implement laboratory and on-site tests to evaluate raw materials, intermediates, and finished laminated products. Monitor key chemical properties, including adhesion, durability, and material performance, to maintain quality standards.

5. Compliance and Standards: Ensure that all processes and products comply with internal quality control standards, industry regulations, and safety requirements. Stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and compliance guidelines.

6. Continuous Improvement: Develop and implement continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducing defects, increasing throughput, and minimizing waste in the lamination process. Use root cause analysis and process data to drive improvements in quality and efficiency.

7. Supplier and Material Management: Work with suppliers to ensure that raw materials meet quality specifications. Evaluate material quality and provide feedback for continuous supplier improvement.

Requirements

1. Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field

2. Minimum of 3 years of experience in chemical process engineering in a manufacturing environment

3. Strong knowledge of chemical processes, quality control principles, and statistical process control (SPC)
