What is a chemical engineering project?

Chemical Engineering Projects involve the application of chemical engineering principles to design, develop, and optimize processes or products. These projects can range from designing chemical plants and developing new materials to improving manufacturing processes and ensuring environmental safety. They often require interdisciplinary collaboration, problem-solving, and the use of simulation and modeling tools. Such projects are essential for innovation in industries like pharmaceuticals, energy, food processing, and materials science.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a chemical engineering project manager?

To excel as a Chemical Engineering Project Manager, you need a robust background in chemical engineering principles, project management, and typically a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with process simulation software (like Aspen Plus), project management tools (such as MS Project), and certifications like PMP are often required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help you coordinate diverse teams and manage project timelines effectively. These competencies are vital to ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget while meeting technical and regulatory standards.

What are common challenges faced by chemical engineers when managing large-scale projects?

One of the main challenges in chemical engineering project management is balancing technical requirements with budget and timeline constraints. Chemical engineers must coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, navigate regulatory approvals, and ensure that safety and environmental standards are met throughout the project lifecycle. Additionally, adapting to unexpected technical issues or supply chain delays requires strong problem-solving skills and effective communication with stakeholders. Successfully managing these challenges is critical to delivering projects on time and within scope.

Job Description

This Chemical Engineer role supports both a food-grade plant and an industrial chemical plant by driving manufacturing and process improvement activities. You will monitor processes, analyze data, troubleshoot issues, and support validation efforts to improve product quality, efficiency, and process consistency. Working within a Delta IV control system and partnering closely with Operations, Quality, Maintenance, and Engineering, you will help maintain safe, compliant, and reliable manufacturing operations while implementing scientifically sound solutions to process-related challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor manufacturing processes in both the food-grade and chemical plants to ensure consistent performance and product quality.
  • Analyze process data to identify trends, deviations, and opportunities for improvement in efficiency, yield, and consistency.
  • Investigate process deviations and nonconformances, support root cause analysis activities, and develop corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support and lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on enhancing product quality, process stability, and operational efficiency.
  • Operate and optimize processes within a Delta IV control system, ensuring accurate configuration and effective use of automation.
  • Collaborate closely with Operations, Quality, Maintenance, and Engineering teams to support day-to-day manufacturing activities.
  • Assist with equipment and process validations, including planning, execution, and documentation of validation activities.
  • Prepare clear and accurate technical documentation, including process descriptions, reports, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Analyze process capability data and use statistical tools to assess performance and recommend improvements.
  • Assist with automation and system improvement projects, contributing engineering expertise to upgrades and modifications.
  • Serve as a technical resource for manufacturing operations, providing guidance on chemical engineering principles, process conditions, and troubleshooting.
  • Help ensure compliance with safety and regulatory requirements in both the food-grade and industrial chemical environments.
  • Support laboratory-related activities as needed to validate process changes, confirm product quality, or troubleshoot issues.
  • Contribute to maintaining a strong safety culture by following established procedures and participating in safety-related activities.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.
  • Knowledge of chemical engineering principles as applied to manufacturing processes.
  • Experience or familiarity with chemical manufacturing and process engineering.
  • Ability to perform process monitoring, data analysis, and troubleshooting in a production environment.
  • Understanding of continuous improvement methodologies and their application in manufacturing.
  • Ability to support and participate in root cause analysis and corrective action development.
  • Capability to prepare clear technical documentation and reports.
  • Strong collaboration skills to work effectively with Operations, Quality, Maintenance, and Engineering teams.
  • Awareness of safety and regulatory requirements in food-grade and chemical plant environments.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in a food-grade, pharmaceutical, or similar regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Exposure to industrial chemical plant operations.
  • Familiarity with Delta IV or similar distributed control systems (DCS).
  • Experience supporting equipment and process validation activities.
  • Experience in laboratory practices related to process support and quality verification.
  • Experience participating in or leading automation and system improvement projects.
  • Interest in working in a smaller, close-knit organization with a strong safety and stability record.

Work Environment

This role is based on-site across two plants: an upper plant that operates as a culture food-grade pharmaceutical-style facility producing hydrated vegetable oils, and a lower plant that functions as an industrial chemical plant. You will work closely with a small office team of approximately six people, fostering a collaborative and family-oriented atmosphere. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with potential adjustment to 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. depending on operational needs.
