What is a chemical engineering internship?

A Chemical Engineering Internship is a temporary position that provides hands-on experience in applying chemical engineering principles in industry or research settings. Interns may work in areas such as process design, product development, safety analysis, or quality control. They assist engineers with experiments, data analysis, and troubleshooting while gaining practical skills. The internship helps students or recent graduates enhance their technical knowledge and improve problem-solving abilities. It also provides networking opportunities and insight into potential career paths in chemical engineering.

What kinds of tasks and projects can I expect to work on during a chemical engineering internship?

As a Chemical Engineering Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of hands-on and analytical tasks, such as assisting with laboratory experiments, performing data analysis, supporting process optimization projects, and preparing technical documentation or reports. Interns often work under the guidance of senior engineers and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on real-world challenges related to chemical manufacturing, environmental compliance, or product development. You may also have opportunities to learn about safety standards, quality control, and industry regulations, gaining exposure to both day-to-day operations and larger project cycles. This practical experience is designed to help you develop technical skills, professional communication abilities, and an understanding of what a career in chemical engineering involves.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a chemical engineering internship, and why are they important?

To excel in a Chemical Engineering Internship, candidates typically need a solid grounding in chemical engineering principles, laboratory techniques, and data analysis, often demonstrated through progress in a chemical engineering degree program. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or CHEMCAD), laboratory instrumentation, and safety protocols is highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work well in teams help interns contribute effectively to ongoing projects. These competencies ensure interns can quickly adapt, maintain safety standards, and provide meaningful support in real-world industrial or research environments.

Can I do internships as a chemical engineering internship student?

Yes, chemical engineering internship students can participate in internships to gain practical experience in areas such as process design, safety protocols, and laboratory work. These internships typically involve working under supervision in industrial or research settings and may require relevant coursework or certifications. They provide valuable skills for future employment in the chemical engineering field.

Job description

Job Title: Failure Analysis Investigation Engineer (Scientist)Job Description

We are seeking a Failure Mode Investigation Engineer with a bachelor's degree in materials science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, or a related field. In this role, you will investigate product and process failures across electronic assemblies, coatings, polymers, and substrate interfaces. You will combine analytical chemistry, materials characterization, and electrical test methods to determine root cause, support corrective actions, and help prevent recurrence in a regulated R&D and manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct failure analysis and support investigations on electronic components, assemblies, and bonded/coated surfaces, addressing issues such as adhesive debonding, corrosion, delamination, electrical opens/shorts, and battery failures.
  • Document findings in clear investigation reports with evidence, conclusions, and recommended corrective/preventive actions.
  • Characterize failed interfaces and bulk materials using SEM/EDS, FTIR, contact angle, profilometry, cross-section microscopy, and other lab techniques.
  • Interpret chemical mechanisms affecting adhesion, curing, oxidation, moisture ingress, and interphase degradation.
  • Evaluate surface preparation, primers, epoxies, plasma activation, and coating processes against failure modes.
  • Perform electrical diagnostics on failed devices, including continuity, impedance, functional tests, leakage, and signal integrity.
  • Correlate electrical failure signatures with physical/materials evidence, such as bond line defects, contamination, and mechanical stress.
  • Support design-for-reliability inputs based on observed field and manufacturing failures.
  • Collaborate with R&D Engineering, Process, and Quality teams on validation protocols, DOEs, and acceptance criteria.
  • Support nonconformance, supplier quality, and customer complaint investigations.
  • Present technical findings to engineering and quality teams, maintaining traceability per quality system requirements.
Essential Skills
  • 1–3 years of experience in failure analysis, materials testing, electronics troubleshooting, or process engineering (internships/co-op experience considered).
  • Hands-on experience with at least some of microscopy, spectroscopy, electrical test equipment, or mechanical/adhesion testing.
  • Working knowledge of polymers, adhesives, coatings, metals/ceramics, or electronic assembly materials.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical results to non-specialists.
  • Detail-oriented with solid data interpretation and documentation habits.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in failure analysis, root cause investigation, and CAPA support.
  • Proficiency with SEM, EDS, optical microscopy, cross-section analysis, and FTIR.
  • Understanding of surface characterization and failure mode investigation.
  • Experience with DOE, polymer analysis, and nonconformance investigations.
Work Environment

This role is primarily laboratory-based with typical weekday hours. The role offers some flexibility, as testing may require early or late shifts. The position involves preparing samples for imaging, conducting tests, compiling data, and understanding project needs. This is a new role created to understand the true failure rate of devices, offering exposure to various aspects of failure mode investigations and collaboration with engineering teams.
