Chefs Apprentice information

What is a chefs apprentice?

Chefs Apprentices are individuals who are training under the supervision of experienced chefs to learn the skills and techniques needed for a culinary career. They typically work in professional kitchens, assisting with food preparation, cooking, and kitchen organization while gaining hands-on experience. Apprenticeships allow them to develop their culinary abilities, understand kitchen operations, and learn about food safety and hygiene. This role often serves as a stepping stone to becoming a qualified chef and can include both on-the-job training and formal education.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a chefs apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Chef's Apprentice, you need a basic understanding of culinary techniques, food safety, and kitchen operations, often gained through entry-level training or culinary school. Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment, knife skills, and food handling certifications such as ServSafe are typically required. Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to work well under pressure are essential soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure efficient kitchen operations, high-quality food preparation, and a positive learning experience under the guidance of experienced chefs.

What are some common challenges faced by a chefs apprentice and how can they be overcome?

As a Chef's Apprentice, you may encounter challenges such as adjusting to fast-paced kitchen environments, mastering basic knife skills, and managing time effectively during busy service hours. It's normal to feel pressure at first, but seeking feedback from experienced chefs, practicing foundational techniques regularly, and maintaining a positive, adaptable attitude can help you succeed. Building strong communication skills and being proactive in assisting team members will also support your growth and integration within the kitchen brigade.

Job description

Description

o ya is a contemporary Japanese-inspired restaurant founded by Chef Tim and Nancy Cushman after years of travel and culinary exploration throughout Japan and around the world. Known for its innovative cuisine, exceptional ingredients, and warm hospitality, o ya delivers a dining experience rooted in craftsmanship, creativity, and a deep appreciation for Japanese food and sake culture.

We're looking for a Sushi Apprentice who is eager to develop their skills under the guidance of experienced chefs while contributing to a kitchen culture built on precision, teamwork, and hospitality. This is an opportunity to learn the foundations of sushi preparation, knife skills, seafood handling, and Japanese culinary techniques in a fast-paced, high-standard environment.

Whether you're early in your culinary career or looking to deepen your understanding of Japanese cuisine, this role offers hands-on training and a clear path for growth.

THE GIG (AKA WHAT YOU'LL DO)
  • Learn the fundamentals of sushi preparation, including rice production, ingredient preparation, and product presentation.
  • Assist with daily prep of seafood, vegetables, sauces, garnishes, and other ingredients.
  • Support the Sushi Chef and culinary team during service while maintaining quality and consistency.
  • Develop proper knife skills, fish handling techniques, and food safety practices.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and service-ready sushi station.
  • Receive, label, rotate, and store products according to company standards.
  • Complete opening, closing, and side work responsibilities.
  • Follow recipes, specifications, and plating standards with attention to detail.
  • Work collaboratively with the kitchen team to ensure a smooth guest experience.
  • Embrace coaching, feedback, and continuous learning opportunities.
YOU MIGHT BE A GREAT FIT IF YOU...
  • Have a genuine interest in sushi, Japanese cuisine, and culinary craftsmanship.
  • Are eager to learn and grow in a professional kitchen environment.
  • Thrive in fast-paced settings and stay focused under pressure.
  • Pay attention to the small details that separate good from great.
  • Show up ready to contribute, support your teammates, and improve every day.
  • Value hospitality, teamwork, and taking pride in your work.

Previous kitchen experience is helpful, but a strong work ethic, positive attitude, and willingness to learn are even more important.

Requirements

WHAT YOU'LL GET
  • Hands-on training from experienced culinary professionals.
  • Opportunities to develop specialized sushi and Japanese cooking skills.
  • Career growth within a chef-driven restaurant group.
  • A team that values mentorship, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Competitive pay and benefits based on eligibility.

Pay range $20-$24 per hour based on experience
