As a Rack and Chassis Design Mechanical Engineer, you'll design and build the physical backbone that powers next-generation AI, from cutting-edge AI servers and high-density infrastructure to advanced liquid cooling solutions. This is a rare opportunity to solve some of the most demanding thermal and mechanical challenges in the industry, working on systems that push the boundaries of what's possible in modern computing.

Our high-impact Mechanical Design and Development team has an opportunity for a Rack and Chassis Design Mechanical Engineer at our labs in Austin, TX. Our team is focused on the mechanical development of AMD’s advanced server products and platforms, and your work will span from early-stage concept development through product commercialization, involving both pre- and post-silicon activities, and you will.

THE PERSON:

You are a self-driven, technically proficient engineer with a strong background in mechanical design and system integration at the server and datacenter levels. You bring a demonstrated ability for innovation and continuous improvement throughout your career, as well as a track record of using your proven engineering expertise to drive best practices and value across an organization.

You bring excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a collaborative design mindset, and strong design tradeoff judgement. You actively listen to other perspectives, thoughtfully evaluate technical tradeoffs and are willing to adapt or rethink your own design approach to achieve the best overall solution. You thrive in an environment where multiple engineering design teams work together to solve complex technical challenges.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collaborate with a global team to define, design, and integrate mechanical systems for server/compute products.
  • Lead mechanical development efforts across server design, system architecture, rack-level integration, and cooling solutions.
  • Perform mechanical modeling in Creo, tolerance analysis, and system-level mechanical design tailored to AMD’s strategic market segments.
  • Contribute to post-silicon development through test planning, characterization, data analysis, and support of customer/reference systems.
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to junior engineers; act as a key decision-maker in design reviews and cross-functional discussions.
  • Drive the continuous improvement of mechanical design processes and workflows.
  • Champion innovation by introducing new mechanical design concepts, technologies, and methodologies.
  • Use independent judgment and initiative to solve complex mechanical challenges and influence product direction.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Technical Leadership:
  • Experience and demonstrated ability to manage and contribute to multiple technically diverse programs in parallel.
  • Demonstrated success in leading engineering efforts from concept through production, leading detailed sheet metal design efforts, including enclosure and chassis development, with strong understanding of fabrication processes, tooling design, cost optimization, DFM/DFA (Design for Manufacturability and Assembly), and supplier collaboration from prototype through high-volume production.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; background of influencing and collaborating across internal teams, external vendors and partners, and geographies.
  • Experience leading by example and promoting a culture of teamwork and shared success.
Technical Experience:
  • Strong background in mechanical design, design for manufacture, and mechanical analysis.
  • Experience in server and server infrastructure design is highly desired. Proficiency in developing mechanical solutions at the system level for semiconductor products is essential, including data analysis and product characterization.
  • Seasoned experience in mechanical design and development, with senior/lead level in server and switch development field.
  • Proven expertise in the integration of silicon into system-level products, particularly in high-performance computing/server environments.
  • Strong understanding of thermal management, cooling systems, mechanical modeling tools, and industry-standard design practices.
  • Mechanical Modeling: Working knowledge of statistical analysis, structural and tolerance analysis, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Proficiency in Creo.
Strategic Thinking:
  • Ability to define and implement mechanical solutions in a dynamic, high-tech environment with evolving business and technical priorities.
ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
