Job description

Building Substitute at Capital Preparatory Bronx Charter School


Capital Preparatory Schools is committed to teaching and learning that promotes the success of every student by:

    • Providing individualized instruction and enrichment opportunities for students to ensure that gifted students are challenged and struggling students are supported;

Building Substitute responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Provides classroom instruction to students consistent with lesson plans and curriculum at any grade level and subject in the absence of the regular teacher.
  2. Plans a program of study that meets the needs and abilities of students.
  3. Communicates with regular teacher and school leadership regarding class progress.
  4. Covers classes or other roles within Capital Prep as needed, including food service functions.
  5. Fills long-term substitute role if needed.
  6. Creates a positive, orderly, and safe learning environment.
  7. Upholds the expectations for all Capital Prep students.
  8. Maintains a professional appearance
  9. Maintains the established routine of the school and classroom procedures.
  10. Engages students with empathy and respect.
  11. Communicates effectively with students, staff, and families as needed
  12. Must maintain student confidentiality as required by law and school procedures.
  13. Performs any and all duties as may be assigned by Administration.

Skills/Requirements:

  • Must demonstrate regular attendance and punctuality and remain for the entire work day
  • Ability to work effectively and under the direction of others;
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret lesson plans and textbooks with clear oral and written presentation skills.
  • Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts and apply the same, including fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
  • Effective classroom management strategies;
  • Engaging instructional methods;
  • Strong organizational, planning, and communication skills;
  • Willingness to be collaborative and flexible, committed to self-improvement and holding self to the highest of expectations;
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Passion and enthusiasm for students.
  • Ability to speak, stand, talk, walk, see, hear,(corrected or uncorrected) and, sometimes, to sit.
  • Ability to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, as needed. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to read small print.
  • Ability to frequently bend, reach above the head, as well as forward, and use fine motor skills.

  • Experience/Training:
  • Bachelor's Degree Required
  • One year of experience working with students.
